i stopped buying it years ago , all seemed to be SJ, racing , and dressage , thats not to say they cant be reported on , but is by no means a fair spread of equine competition reports I find it an overpriced magazine for what it has become. Have been an avid reader since the early 60's! There is no balance between disciplines, no "meaty" articles, no connection between article and pics and, very little mention of Ireland except the occasional hunting report and once a year for the Dublin Horse Show. I bought the Horse & Hound recently - particularly because there was an article about Sam Roberts. The article was very disappointing (particularly thin on actual facts) when the subject was so interesting. Often say I could do better myself! Would love to give an insight into Goresbridge Sales, or a breeder of Sport Horses, or a producer of show jumpers..... not to mention the pony scene!

What is with the Horse and Hound...? I bought this week's issue especially for the report on the North of England In-Hand and M&M Show report, - editors please note that the clue is in the name of the show!!! - and there is NOT ONE photo of an M&M pony, not one, not the Torne Valley Supreme, not the HOYS qualifier champion, not the M&M mini champion, none. But there are three, yes that's 1, 2, 3, from veteran/SSADL classes. No disrespect at all to the latter and it is great to see these older ponies gracing the pages of what used to be the weekly bible, but come on please reporters... the North of England series has a horse show, a pony show, and the In-Hand and M&M show, so surely there should be some good representation of M&M ponies in the report from this show. That's the final straw for me with this magazine. I used to buy it for all the show results, but these are no longer published, although I note that dressage results are still published. Editorial content seems to have given way to full-page photos, which obviously fill up more space for less cost and devalue the magazine for the reader. Does anyone actually like the new format? Hold on a minute. It's well known that Reporters are allowed only x no. of words / article. Call me old -fashioned but I agree with the post in which it's accepted that some still prefer to sit down and READ a copy of a MAGAZINE; not just glance over digital print. Actually, in regard to your criticism above that no M&M's were reported at the Northern Horse Show - that is factually incorrect. With regard to the actual content within this well-known weekly magazine, perhaps if some were to read other published articles (Veterinary, Show Jumping, Dressage, Hunting [clue in the title here, Horse and HOUND] Racing, Endurance Saddlery and so on), they might become a little less blinkered and thus better informed about the Equine Industry in general. And with regard to excellent Northern Horse Show coverage of the £1000 (Richard Leeman Sponsored) SSADL Championship, in this instance this was undeniably a superb Final and fully deserving of print. Yes, Caroline, reporters are of course only allowed x number of words, which is why it is so important that the photos as well as the words are a balanced representation of the show. On your second point, I completely agree, and I think many in the equestrian world, who mainly do not spend their days at desks, would also agree. On your third point, I take issue. I did not make a criticism that no M&Ms were reported; I made the criticism that no M&Ms were shown in the photographs, whereas there were three photos of veteran/SSADL horses, which in my view - and factually, scientifically, numerically - notwithstanding the merits of the Leeman final, is unbalanced. If we are concerned about factual accuracy, then please note that the name of the show in the original post is NOT the Northern Horse Show. The Northern Horse Show used to take place in Yorkshire and has not run for some years now. The original post refers to the North of England M&M and In-Hand Show, this being one of a series of shows under the North of England Shows banner. Incidentally, I'm an editor, so am an absolute stickler for grammatical and factual accuracy!

I stand corrected over the title of the show referred to, which is of course the North of England Horse & Pony Show series and I apologise to those concerned. I'm showing my age; if I recall correctly the 'North of England' took place on Doncaster Racecourse. However, I have a far more pressing (domestic ill-health) matter which is concerning me very greatly at the moment, so with respect will bow out of further discourse.

We have an annual subscription and have been saying over recent months I don’t know why we still do as the content is going less and less. What other magazine do other people recommend? Would like one that covers all aspects of the sport for example showing, SJ, Eventing, Endurance, Dressage, Carriage Driving, Racing, which Horse and Hound used to cover but endurance and carriage driving hasn’t been covered recently.

I stopped reading it (after buying it since childhood) when it started reporting in a 'Sun' style. Reporting on skirmishes within societies and at events that were certainly of no interest to the general horse public.
It went downhill from there.

When i was younger you would dream of going champion or winning at a show so you could make it into the horse and hound as then you could save that magazine. Now you are lucky if you even get a line mentioned when you win a HOYS Qual. I don't buy and have not bought this magazine for a very long time.
