My daughter is desperate to have a go at concours d'elegance, which I have agreed I will help her with, but I simply have no idea what it's all about!!! Think I may just be a a little slow but could somebody explain it to me please, as would rather do it well if we're going to!

I believe - and I can assure you that it is very personal preference!! That it is the overall picture. Basically, if you can imagine taking a picture of all the competitors, it is the picture you (as the judge) would like to hang on your wall. Walk and trot only (usually!) No individual show (usually!!)

Concours is not just a dress up. Over the past few years it's really derailed from what it was!! Concours is about riding as a lady would of done years ago in the Edwardian /Victorian period with a suiting outfit. It's not just a lovely dress that looks prettying, it's about elegance and elegant riding, the dress has to suit the horse and the rider and should be able to ride in properly. About 5 years ago you had to walk trot and canter as well as a gallop on the go round and do an individual show. Unfortunately this rarely happens any more which in my opinion is a shame because if the dress isn't practical to ride properly in its not good. I really recommended RJR costume designs for hints aNd tips as she makes proper concours outfits! Attachment Deleted

Ladies would then have always ridden side saddle, does this apply to concours? Surely not, it would cut out most of the competitors. Not that I'm likely to be involved in doing them, just trying to elucidate.

Unless the class description says otherwise, modern day concours classes can be entered either astride or side saddle, so please check your show schedule (most side saddle concours are run under SSA rules)
As a long-established designer and manufacturer of concours d'elegance outfits, I have seen ridden concours flourish throughout the UK. At one time, it was only at the major championship shows where one would find concours classes whereas nowadays, they can be found most weekends during the summer and autumn months at riding club level and upwards, which is fantastic.
The overall picture sought is one of elegance and refinement and I base my outfits on the Victorian/Edwardian era when well-to-do ladies hacked out in the park in their very best riding attire .. of course, I like to add a modern twist to this theme where I can and I offer two price ranges, Budget and Luxury Bespoke, with outfits from both ranges winning at Equifest, PUK, NPS, Royal London, NW Champs, UK Showing, Supreme Showdown, to name a few.
'Concours Guest', if you would like to have a look at my website www.concours-couture.com and then give me a call on 01704 232769, I shall be glad to advise you further
Good luck all you concoursers!
