Please can anyone help, what would I be best using to protect my highland ponys gorgeous long mane from rug rubs esp at wither area? I am not sure wether to purchase a Bossy Maneguard or a Snuggy Hoods Lycra hood and separate body. What do you all do please. All advice greatly accepted and appreciated.

Our fells are rugged only in the winter when they are clipped. I buy standard neck rugs which come well up their necks and so far we've not had a problem with any rubbing of their manes, even clipped they'd be far too hot with full necks.

My fell has a mane to his knees, it is oiled once a week, then plaited in 5 big chunky plaits. I never ever use neck covers as not only do they rub but the hair will fall out if the roots get too hot. I brush it only before shows.

Pig oil and brushed out very gently once a week. I don't leave my highland's mane plaited at all.
Pig oil helps the rugs slip over the mane. Mine has a standard neck on unless clipped, then a full neck medium weight. We haven't lost any mane, if anything it's getting a little long!

Apologies for hijacking the post, but can anyone please recommend a good mane conditioner? Our new pony's mane is really coarse and I want to try to soften it. Thank you.

Cowboy Magic Rosewater Conditioner is excellent, I use it on mane and tail, then after a bath I rinse him in a diluted solution of it and rinse off. It helps to lay the coat beautifully flat, leaving it soft, silky and so shiny too. Fab stuff and smells lovely as well.
