I ride a Connemara gelding and he competes in open flat classes. However does not seem to like either of the Pelhams we have tried him in but goes beautifully in his snaffle and is very light in the hand. We have tried him in a single jointed show Pelham, a lozenge show Pelham and a French link show Pelham. He constantly chews at the bit when stood still and doesn't relax down in his outline and can become quite strong in it but is never strong in his snaffle. Teeth have been done. Was wondering whither to maybe try a double and just ride off the snaffle? Any suggestions welcome! ?

We had similar issues with a fell mare, wilkie Pelham worked for us

Never seen a Wilkie Pelhams before welshy1 will have a look at them. I'm sure there's a jointed happy mouth snaffle at the yard could maybe try him in that before trying the Pelham version as he's never been in a happy mouth. He's currently in an eggbut lozenge snaffle. Does anyone think it could be the curb chain he doesn't like? Thought about maybe trying the lozenge again with a leather curb instead?

Why not try him in a proper double. Then you can ride him off the snaffle?

I did think that. I had asked in original post if that would be a good option. Then I could just ride off the snaffle. I'm thinking that might be the best option for him so think his owner is going to look one outdoor him but they might be all to big because she had big hunters before.

We had one that went so much better in a double than she ever did in a pelham, good luck

My fell was not truly happy in any of the number of pelhams we tried him in, although the neue schule warmblood Pelham proved the most successful of them all (not cheap but can hire from the bit bank to try first) He is now in a double with a very neat neue schule loose ring bradoon and a neat Weymouth, this has transformed him in the ring. My new pony (C) is ridden in this bradoon alone at home and also loves it. Most M&M's have small mouths and flshy tongues, in my experience it's trial and error with them. Good luck!

Why can't you just ride in your snaffle?

Thank you for the advice kerbeck. I would just ride him in the snaffle If we can't find anything he is comfortable in but wanted to try other options first as I have seen friends of mine been put down the line due to the judge thinking they were a novice in an open class. Wrong I know and totally disagree with it but sometimes that's just the way it is. But like I say if the pony wasn't comfortable in the things we tried of course we would not ride him in it, it would be snaffle instead. Planning some dressage over winter so plenty of time to do a trail and error on plenty of options
