Please could someone clarify the NCPA rules
11. Handlers and grooms MUST be appropriately dressed when entering the ring and advised to wear hard hats.
16. Handlers must note that in accordance with NCPA Rule 18 hats must be worn in the ring at all times.
So, the first one is "advice" ?? The second one is a "must" (I checked rule 18 and it has the hat BS numbers etc......so it's not just a 'dress code' - soft cap will suffice sort of rule) Puzzled! And thinking that I need to go out and buy my handler a new hard hat. Of course, I can see the sense in the rule but very few in-hand exhibitors wear hard hats.

To clarify - NCPA requires all handlers & grooms to wear a hat when in the ring but they also offer the advise that those showing should consider wearing hard hats for safety purposes, particularly when handling young stock but the current safety standard hat is only compulsory for those in young handler classes. Not in the office today so no rule book handy but I will look to see if these need clarifying as the new book is being prepared at the moment.
Many grooms do wear hard hats & so do handlers but there are no plans to make this compulsory

Pogle - I think you must be looking at the show rules in the schedule as I have just checked the NCPA Rulebook & the numbers/rules you have quoted are not as listed in our rules Hat rules as follows:
18 Correctly secured BSI skull caps/riding hats – to CURRENT STANDARD must be worn at all times when mounted and for entrants in YOUNG HANDLER classes.
29 Exhibitors and their grooms must, at all times, present themselves in the show ring neatly and smartly dressed.
But basically my answer covered your query

Yes, the rules I quoted as number 11 and 16 are in the NCPA Winter Schedule. But, show rule 16 refers to NCPA rule 18 "in accordance with NCPA Rule 18....." and on the NCPA page www.thencpa.co.uk/terms.asp that version of rule 18 doesn't have the second half of the sentence about mounted and young handlers as you have quoted it (hence my confusion). Thank you very much for clarifying it.

The rule 18 I quoted is the 2016 wording as the rules get "tidied up" each year (rather than adding more if possible) & the YH hat rule wasn't as clear as adding it here also, but have not yet been finalised for the website/rule book
Enjoy the show!
