dont do it if you intend to show - this is part of a clip i would penalise !!!!! just go to natural leg lines

What about M &M's? I thought they had to be clipped blended to the knee or doesn't it matter? We are about to clip for the Heritage champs next weekend.

My section A is clipped for Heritage, all off down to knee and hock. Clip as normal to these points, then switch to doing a small amount in the direction of the hair. Blends beautifully & leaves all feathers intact. I am OCD about lines, hate them! Lol I feel it looks much better, as leaving full legs can look odd, especially if a big colour difference between clipped & hairy colour.

Sorry but i disagree on natives going below the natural leg line on any native leg hair top or bottom shouldnt be touched or blended and in highlands or hairier types also i dont touch jaw lines either ........ i read the breed standards !

I have to agree. I also follow breed standard. There was a right hullaballoo over clipping Welsh youngsters heads & necks. I feel the same about legs. I've just done a low trace on my sec A as he is a bit sweaty when worked but hoping not to have to take much more off over winter.

I think its actually better for the horse because their hair grows back as one, it must be uncomfortable for them when their coat is changing again? It looks so much tidier than awful leg warmers that take months of grooming to get out. My section B used to take until July to get them out with hours of grooming a day and he was clipped in like oct/nov time, we used all the grooming blocks, furminators, everything and it would just not come out!! Then we got my C, never used to have to clip her because she never got a winter coat, then last year she did so we made the decision to get our C Clipped and blended and she looks fab, looking forward to heritage on Saturday, plus we've never been penalized for it.

I can see that argument on a hairier breed, I probably wouldn't do if on my Dartmoor. However I did my section A a few weeks ago, she just looks like she has a summer cost now ready for Heritage. I removed none of her feather & she is a working pony, I agree on not clipping youngsters, but she is busy with hacking & pony club so it was also practical..... I also read the breed standard, and I don't feel I have contravened it in this case.

Direct from WPCS
10.8 Clipping Animals four years old or over, which have been clipped for winter activities can be shown and should not be penalised. Judges must take special note of this. Legs must not be clipped. Please note: youngstock must not be clipped out.
I'm wondering where the leg starts!!!!

Having queried this before, I am on a committee of a WPCS area association, was informed that my style of clipping would not be penalised, and it was the removal of feather they were concerned about. Also I would like to point out I am competing under BSPS rules on the weekend not showing under WPCS rules....

I wasn't being arsey MM. We are on the same team!!! Usually. I just think rules aren't often clear enough and interpretation of them often differs. I've always taken it as being the whole leg but things change. It would benifit my pony to have half legs too but then I do show under WPCS rules so wonder if that would be penalised??
I have always shown my Welshies as Welshies regardless of which society I'm showing under. Suppose that's through breeding them as well though and not just doing riddens.
This season is the first one in a long time that I have not attended and shown at a WPCS show as we have been concentrating on the qualifiers.

Didn't think you were, sorry if reply came across as such.... I think it's interesting that breed standards in ridden under different society rules don't seem to be adhered to. There is a lot of trimming and even make up to be seen! Lol Where as in my experience not as tolerated in the breeding/youngstock/in hand set so much. I stewarded at our Spring Show for a WPCS panel judge and he did not penalise this sort of thing ridden, but obviously cannot speak for all. I will ask the question on where does the leg start at the AGM also why LR ponies can't have handles under WPCS rules, but that's a whole different thread!

Lol, the handles on LR's was supposed to have been addressed at last years AGM but I'm not sure it was. It's bonkers!!!!!

It's a grey area that needs to be specified by WPCS.

What about highlands?? We have just purchased our first native. I have previously had hacks cobs hunters etc so a bit unsure of where people clip them to i know not to touch the head whatsoever but am i best leaving 'normal' leg lines or blending them to the knee? Any close up pics? He will be in qualifiers early on in the season. Any info would be great I have spoken to the Hps but they seemed abit vaugue on the dos and donts also.
