First a good balancer, then add oil product of your choice. It's all in the feeding.

with our mini horses i have become very aware that vitamins and minerals are as essential to them as a big horse ,,, but unfortunately they cant consume the amount of feed to get the right vits and mins through short feed ,,,, one of my minis has been demolishing salt lick like theres no tomorrow ,,, and hes had a reasonably hard season ,, by my standards !!! ,,, so i have now gone back to the good old mineral lick instead ,,, i totally agree shine comes from within ,,,ie , balancer and oil ,,,and feeding for the work they have done , not the work they might do,,, dont over rug so that they utilise their body mass as it is supposed to be used ,,, and plenty of fibre

Shine definitely comes from within, I swear by bluechip native pony balancer. My fell gleams. Then good grooming and keeping brushes clean, washing sweat off etc.

Elbow grease, plenty of good old-fashioned grooming is all our racehorses used to get, and we consistently won best turned out prizes..... most of our ponies shown this year, when without a pre-show bath .... Also you only get out, what you put in - for us Top Spec feed balancer

Most of it comes from the prep - A good balancer and micronised linseed. lots of elbow grease. Supreme deluxe gloss and a microfibre cloth for a final polish at a show

A good bath helps, our yearling is having a bath this afternoon. I'm hoping there is a pony under all that fluff!

Coats will come out when they're ready, I don't believe anything you feed makes them come out any quicker, possibly light for longer hours in the winter, too late for that now. But feeding for shine as above coupled with keeping up with removing the loose hair as it comes out will go a long way, coupled with a good bath and a lycra bodysuit to lay the hair down flat if going showing. Some colours are much worse than others though, I'd say roans being worst as they go through so many colour changes as they shed. Mine all currently look like greys as the white is predominant but will go back to their proper colour when that comes out. Buckskins can do it too, holding on to a dark undercoat.
The original question was about getting a shine on the coat rather than getting rid of winter cots!

I am doing all of the above mentioned and my coats will not come out .All in the best of health ,wormed ,teeth done so what I am doing wrong ? Give your horse a hot bath, and make certain that the rinse water is also hot. Then rug up and regualer grooming. The best way to get a shine on a horses coat is to groom every day, keep brushes clean. Please avoid products like pig oil or baby oil, elbow grease is the best product and it is free
