We've got a little Dartmoor that currently has no jockey and needs exercise, so I thought I'd give riding and leading a go from my highland.
So, tonight we had a go in the field and he did lead fairly happily from my mare, she seemed to take to it quite well.
Has anyone got any tips on exercises to practice or any tips? Would like to be able to take him out hacking with her eventually.

It helps if they both get on It also helps if they both know/respond to their names/voice commands. And it helps if both are obedient and similar in their work attitude - it's far harder if you are having to drag/kick one along whilst trying valiantly to slow the other down! I used to ride and lead with my arab and sec a youngster, who similarly needed exercise! It worked well as both were good friends, and the arab was much better hacking in company than alone! For insurance/liability reasons I would only go on the road if the led horse was bitted - I ran the far side rein through the bit ring closest to me, I know some people prefer to use a longer rope/single lead, but this was how I was taught to do it at a BHS yard/with hunters. When venturing out of the yard for the first couple of times I had my husband walk on foot with the sec a so that he was able to help if I had a problem, but actually this turned out to be unnecessary Still worth it I think for peace of mind the first time though - my sec a was only a 2/3yo so still very much being trained (but an old head on young shoulders, so we never did have a problem with her then, or at any other stage, and she has gone on to be a brilliant kids pony perfect in all traffic, so I think the early road experiences with a friend did her good )
