hi emma ,i had ponie with renal failure ,i had him for six months before any thing showed up the first symptom was hind lameness wich was hard to spot it took me ages to persuede the vet he was unlevel at all , at first i thought he had tied up !! looked v similar .i asked the vet to run some bloods ,they showed elevated white cell count ,following further tests it was his kidneys and some liver damage ,possibly caused by ragwort poisining !!! ( i have no ragwort any where on my land , apparently the toxins can lay dormant for years !!! it cost a small fortune but the pony is in his early tenties now and is still playing pony club !

We lost a pony a few years ago to liver disease I first noticed something was not right in her way of going, she was not as free moving. she get getting impacted colic and developed jaundice, the vet suspected liver damage when he came out to her. She was hospitalised for approx 8 weeks during which time she became photosensitive and every possible thing was done to try to save her but sadly she was too ill by this point. I must add that hers was a very extreme case though.
