My daughter rides a friends sec C. It is a young pony and still quite green. She struggles with steering, often the pony will go it wants to go! The pony will nap and just generally take advantage if she can. My daughter is so keen she perseveres but now it's getting a battle of wills, don't want her to lose her confidence and as its not my pony have to be wary of following owners lead understandably. Suggestion (kind) please. I'm losing sleep over this ?

It sounds from what you say that it's not so much a steering problem in that the pony doesn't understand steering, but more of an obedience to the rider one. Is your daughter the only one to ride the pony, or is there anyone else to school it for her? In an ideal world the pony needs someone bigger/more experienced or both to teach her what's what. Mine are broken by a small adult who says that at some point they all try it on to see if they can get away with it, but one battle won by the rider very early on, as she can do, is enough to make the point for the future. If it's becoming a habit so the pony knows she can to an extent get away with its become a cycle that needs breaking.
I'm sorry if this doesn't come under your definition of kind but I'm trying to help. Does your friend the pony's owner see what's going on? Could you have a chat with her about it? Your daughter must be your priority, the last thing you would want is for her confidence to be dented, trust me, I've been there!

I agree it does sound like the pony needs further schooling. You could try long-reining him. Introduce exercises starting in walk such as serpentines, figures of eight, bending within a school, or small area. Avoid using any servere bits , however a french link snaffle may help.

I totally agree with SarahP. Once the obedience issue is dealt with if you still have a steering issue then try a fulmer snaffle for a bit of extra guidance and remember that legs are used for steering too! Good luck

I am afraid young girls on young ponies doesn't work the best for either. Pony needs proper schooling and once educated the little girl needs lessons on pony.
