Hi there, just wondering if anyone has any experience of feather mite at all? I bought a heavily feathered mare in November who was biting her legs and constantly stamping her feet. I tried to wash her legs in a Dermo shampoo which did ease the symptoms but didn't cure the problem completely. I then had the vet to her who suggested that she be injected with Dectomax I think it was called? She had two injections which seemed to do the trick and they seemed to have gone. But now she has suddenly started stamping again.
Does anyone have any suggestions of how to rid her of them? I'm unsure whether to have her injected again, or whether there is another course of treatment that would work better?
Thanks.

Had a fell with bad mites . We had him injected as mites can get under the skin . We then used pig oil and sulphur . Need to do a patch test first as some do get a reaction to pig oil.

I use a Dectomax injection in the spring followed by a Lime/Sulphur wash every 3 to 4 weeks through the spring and summer. Smells terrible and makes their legs yellow when wet, but dries white so no problem. Rub it in well. Use pig oil and sulphur through the winter. These work for me.

I have had some good results with diatomaceous earth. My horse never suffers in the summer but always in the winter with mites and I came to the conclusion as he has white legs and is chalked regularly in the summer when competing this could be something to do with it. I did a Google and came up with diatomaceous earth, this has sorted out my horses mites/itchy leg issues and I also use on his feet for smell/thrushy frogs and it's cleared both up with regular applications. I am not one for alternative therapies but lately I have seen some impressive results with using different methods.

I've found frontline spray if they have a flare up and again 10days later works great.
I've just started using itch buster as a preventative measure and so far so good.
