Cutting a long story short my 17 year old daughter has a 13.3 pony at her dads farm, hes now 15/16 years old and for the last 5 years has sat in a field on his own waiting for her weekend visits when she spoilt him rotten. Hes always been lami prone and been on anti-lam/limited grazing/hay only (with the anti lam) in winter. Gorgeous pony, heart of gold, bombproof, done little showing wise but a quality wh/shp type...boy can he jump!
Sooooooo at our livery yard a new owner came with a 13.2 for her 11 year old that it was quickly evident was too much for her, we like them, understood their dilemma (they bought it as bombproof perfect first childs pony) blah blah blah..... lovely second pony, but not a first. So we mentioned Hannahs pony at her dads sat in a field doing nothing and they wanted him on loan till the daughter gained confidence.
He came, they loved him but didnt listen about the strict feed regime which fortunately over winter they got away with BUT he became a little fresh -nothing naughty just full of energy - we told them to pack in the treats/extra feed/etc...which they did. But for the first time in maybe 10 years they wanted shoes on him for hacking out. Good idea we thought?...he needs more work, shoes it is!
The farrier (their farrier) got them on him, he wasnt easy by all accounts but we werent there. Second time he wasnt having it at all, very upset, rearing, /stamping on anyone and anything, a total nightmare, again we werent there even though we said if you let us know when we'l come and help. Sooooo I rang our farrier explained what was going on and he agreed to come and try. He had 2 calmers, and I had a twitch there (dont kick off about twitch's I hate them too BUT THIS PONY IS ALREADY FOOT SORE and needs shoes)
Farrier came, no way was he having shoes on, I put the twitch on him for all of 10 minutes ( 5mins first to calm him before he tried) no goooo, my foots black from where he landed on me, so we took it straight off. My farrier says its pain linked, the nerves in his feet are sensitive and hes linking shoes with IT HURTS!! The loaneeeee's have said they dont want him now ( this is all today ) they cant cope with 2 ponies so have handed him back.
I told you this was a long story cut short lol lol
My farrier's recommended tapping his feet daily and building up his confidence/de-sensitising the feet, then when he comes to do our boy he'l have a tap about and we'l see how he reacts.
My daughter doesnt want him to go back to her dads and sit alone in the field, I cant afford to keep him long term and pay his livery
Answer = a new loaneeeee for a fab pony
Which I cant look for TILL HE HAS SHOES ON!!! Hes too foot sore without, cant hack out without, needs the work to help the lami, but caught in a catch 22 situation!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any other advise anyone, bearing in mind this is not my pony but I want to help him and my daughter xxxx
