5 YEAR OLD JUST BROKEN AND RIDING AWAY BUT WONT LET YOU NEAR HIM TO TIDY MANE OR WHISKERS ON FACE .CAN ANYONE SUGGEST HOW I MIGHT DO THIS WITHOUT TOTALLY TERRIFYING HIM .

Well for a start don't trim his whiskers - they do use them to feel with and find out how far from things they are, they aren't just dead useless ornamental hair! None of mine shown from home ever had their whiskers trimmed. I'd start by lots of grooming - I take it you're talking about trimming not brushing? Then move onto one of the scissor type trimmers available now, don't pull it.

I am very aware not to trim whiskers but these whiskers are as long as his mane in bits so I could not possibly show him in hand like this .He will stand to be brushed but nothing else .

I would concentrate on his mane to start with. What breed or type is he? Mine were show ponies and I pulled their manes, except those which were very thin when I used a razor to reduce the length. If pulling then it comes out easier when the horse is warm ; i.e. after work. I would then pull just a few hairs while they were eating. However it seems that pulling would be a step too far. Maybe you should get him sedated for the first time so he will understand that trimming does not hurt. I would suggest putting on some music to drown the noise of cutting - not that it is noisey but it may help to distract him. I would compromise and not touch his whiskers until you can do everything else without problems. I think you will find an understanding now that whiskers do not need to be trimmed; in fact I understand that it is illegal to do so in Germany. I would strongly urge you not to trim the whiskers near the eyes, I have never allowed that and my ponies won at the highest level so I see no reason why other peoples could not do so.
