Is it true that aslong as combined laden weight of trailer and car don't exceed 3.5 tonne you can legally tow without taking the trailer test?
After taking the test myself which was just far too much stress my friend is wanting to tow a lightweight trailer behind her mpv Trailer 600kg inladen and car1600kg carrying only pony Max weight 400kg and just the driver would this combination be legal?

the unladen weight of the car and the MAM (fully laden weight) of the trailer should be 3.5 tonne or under . the unladen weight isnt relevant. it should say on the plate what the fully laden weight is of your trailer

Thanks for your reply according to the company website she purchased trailer from Max weight is 1600kg that combined with 1600kg car is 3200kg so would she be legal to tow it without additional test or would it not be allowed as Max tow weight of car is 1200kg?

Its just all so confusing! The sales guy she bought the trailer off said he can 'change the Max weight plate' to comply to the cars Max weight of 1200kg but we can't work out if thatll be legal or not he didn't seem too bothered but that's probably coz the trailer has already been bought. We've tried the dvla and they were very unhelpful (
