Does anybody know please, whether it is ethical for a Supervisor to read a students previous work which is unrelated to dissertation; prior to marking the dissertation?

Firstly, why don't you ask your Supervisor the reason for seeing previous work? I cannot answer your question ethically but an opinion would be that perhaps the supervisor wants to read your style of writing from previously submitted work? From reading previous work your supervisor would be of more help to you because he/she would know your style and would be able to offer constructive input for improvement before the marking? You know that your dissertation is vitally important for finishing your Degree or Masters, so all help offered would be beneficial; are you in a slight panic about your final piece of work? If so, chill, it will be ok I know it's hard work because I proof read and offered suggestions for improvement on my granddaughters work; I know she had panic attacks at the thought of the dissertation! She came out with an Honours Degree and I feel really proud of her achievement I'm sure you will do too, good luck and remember to have a bit of 'me time' it does help
