Have bought daughter new jacket, only had limited budget so its a nice enough jacket but not a really fancy make. It is not very fitted but she is a skinny minx! Anyone ever taken a jacket in at the waist, does it work??

I have, frequently and yes, it does work provided the rest of the jacket is a good fit.
Simply unpick about 8" to 10" of the seam at the centre back of the jacket at the bottom then turn the whole jacket inside out and put it on your daughter and pin it at the waist to desired amount, then sew and notch (do not cut off any excess fabric, you may need to let it out again at a later date!) .. good luck
