Any good treatments? A fly rug is out of the question, as ripped it to shreds. Tried keeping him in through the early morning and evening, but still rubs. Any suggestions greatly received.

add garlic to his feed, it will taint the taste of his blood. wash regulary with a replant shampoo... make certain you rinse really well. Try citronella. If you have you own land plant Indian Bean Trees, they have a naturel fly replant and will give him somewhere to shade.

Garlic is a fab repellant unless they have sweet itch.
Garlic boosts the immune system and makes it work faster, which is not what you want with sweet itch as the immune system is already working overdrive to the reaction of the midge bite!
Have you tried anti histamines. Don't donanything for mine but others have had good results.

I have seen a lot of posts on fb recommending 'Stinky Stuff' so much so that I have just bought some to try on our little old pony who tends to be itchy and has in the past had mild sweetitch.

Neem oil I have found to be good. They also say Avon's skin so soft is good for midges. Little blighters are a nightmare!!

Avon skin so soft is excellent. I only need to apply it every other day and mine has a full mane and tail with no rubbing

Stinky Stuff! This is just magic stuff. We seem to have a very localised midge that really irritates them. I used it last year and it worked wonders and have started using it again this year and couldn't do without it - their itch just disappears!
