Hi all I have a young registered Riding Pony who i hope to show in hand this year. In my opinion she is more of a hunter pony rather than a show pony but do i still turn out to type for the riding pony breeding classes? I read somewhere they are to be shown in coloured browbands only no matter what type? I attended a county show recently and noticed all ponies had coloured browbands on. Also i have noticed that Equifest has an in hand riding pony class as well as an in hand hunter pony class, is a riding pony classed as a type as well as a breed? Or do some refer to show ponies as riding ponies? Thank you all

The riding pony stud book simply records your animal's breeding but does not classify "type". If you feel your pony is more of a hunter pony type then you should show her in these classes with a plain browband & often a flat nose and as well, but try to choose a width that balances her head. If you wish to show her in th RP classes then she should have a coloured brow band & usually a stitched finer noseband, again to suit her head.

Hi Janet Thanks for your reply. She is NPS registered so therefore eligible for the riding pony classes but can i turnout as a hunter pony in the riding pony breeding classes or are these strictly for show ponies? Hope that makes sense

Halcyon you misread Janet's post. A hunter pony is a hunter pony and a riding pony is a riding pony. You wouldn't take a hunter pony in a riding pony class regardless of its breeding as it is a different type so no, you can ot show your pony in a riding pony class turned out as a hunter pony.

Hope that makes sense No - she should be shown as a Riding Pony in these classes. If you are actually unsure which she is, then try her as a RP correctly turned out in RP breeding classes & also as a HP, correctly turned out, in HP breeding classes. You should then have an idea which category she is most suited to, for her future showing career. PS She also needs to be registered with the NPS Riding Pony Stud book for many HP breeding classes too. As I stated, the stud book is a record of her breeding not her type.
