Noticed yesterday that a lady in the hunter classes at my local show was riding with a long whip rather than a cane. Initially I thought she was just using it to run her horse up in the confo stage but she rode in the open and amateur classes (& won both) with this whip. She ran her horse up herself so I couldn't see she would be allowed a long whip on the basis of a physical disability. Any ideas ?

Do you mean she was riding with a long schooling whip? There are maximum lengths for whips in most classes. The hunter riders tend to have a cane with a knob at the end.

Yes she was riding with a dressage whip rather than a cane which I thought wasn't allowed given the rules about length of sticks.

Yes only allowed in side saddle classes but not of a schooling whip style, they should be an extended cane or a variation of. Side saddle canes shouldn't exceed 39 inches.

you are allowed a whip if not exceeding 30 "
I recall Gill Oliver carrying a long leather covered whip ( it had a very small leather tab on the end ) purchased from Swain Adney Brigg, when riding side saddle, it was under 39 "

Just measured 30inches and it is longer than you think for sure. This was a schooling / dressage style whip but it looked like she had cut the tail end off. Couldn't say for sure how long it was but it definitely was not a cane or short style whip. And she rode in both classes with it although interestingly I noticed she kept it in her outside hand all the time. But it was the first thing I noticed so surely the judges couldn't have missed it. And she won both classes too. She did use it quite a bit too.

So presumably the judge(s) were satisfied as to the length & the style is not actually forbidden, although very unusual - most rules state "whips" not to exceed 30" & often add that hunting whips are allowed as they are only measured on the "hard" part of the whip, but not sure which rules this class was under

Yes I guess the judges didn't have any issue & I was curious because I'd like to carry a slightly longer whip. It was RI classes under SHB rules & I've just looked in the hand book and all it says is plain Malacca or leather cane. Nothing about length. Interesting.

Found a nice brown dressage whip on the Fylde Saddles web site which they say is adapted to be 30in and legal for the show ring. Sounds ideal.

We had that whip from Fylde, I trimmed the end a bit as it was green. It was 30 inches bang on and our chap was lazy off the leg so it did help a lot but we got questioned on it a few times by judges. I trimmed it too much in the end and it all unravelled so I put a proper end on it.
