I have an 8yo Welsh Section D mare, who stands at just over 14hh so does look small in a straight D class anyway. But my main concern is that she looks "light" in the ring compared to others. She is well covered and has nice topline although not cresty. When she jumps she looks very well and some might say fat but the second she walks into a show ring she looks like a whippet in comparison!! what do i do? she's not a big eater, has been on linseed nuts chop and top spec. now on copra aswell as she wont eat lots of oil. out 24/7 apart from at shows (i work at a large show centre so she comes to work for the odd week or two and lives in)
what else can i do?! btw i dont want to be fat - she does workers and jumps so she needs to be fit enough to do that job thanks in advance

Please don't feed her up Just because all of the others are huge doesn't mean she needs to be, if she does workers then she needs to come across as if she can hunt and she wouldn't be able to with unnecessary weight. For me, seeing a well covered horse is a breath of fresh air and id much rather see this then a honking great overweight cob puffing away Unless she's a bad doer then good grass is all she needs IMO After all she is a native...

No she is a good doer, she just drops the "belly" when i take her away esp if jumping. probably because i keep her stabled at work. i gave her haylage last week but ive just put hay ready for this weekend in the hope she will eat plenty. she just looked a bit too run up in comparison to the others, but having said that her movement looks alot bigger on the photos and the judge took forever to decide between us and a nice black c, which i thought was positive given she found the canter go round really hard! im just taking her out and trying to let her see the world. the workers judges seemed to like her
