School while hacking out...horses for courses, if thats what works best for him/her go with it. They'l probably perform better in the ring because they dont see it as the "boring stuff"

Mine was always lazy and seemed bored unless there were jumps in the school! People would say take him to the beach or feed him this etc, nothing worked. Hunting perked him up slightly but it didn't last all season! I have since moved him home where I don't have an arena so have to school in fields or out hacking and he is like a new horse, loads of life in him and keen as mustard every day!

I think you answered yourself in the title. Variety is the spice of life! Do lots of different thinks with him. If you must use the school lunge him rather than ride him, you can observe how he goes, plus because the work is more intense you will be there for less time. Not sure if you compete or show but if you do try something different. Unless you are really at the top of your game then the horse world is your oyster; do not confine yourself... or your horse to doing the same thing every weekend. See what else you can do in your area.. have fun
