any suggestions please. pony will go lovely in pelham for a few days and think we've finally found a suitable pelham, then decides its the worst thing in his mouth, going to try a double and see if this is the way to go. teeth and back checked and all ok.. he goes fine in a snaffle be it wilkie copy or hanging cheek

When you say he decides it's the worst thing in his mouth, what does he do?

Double might work then because you can ride just off the top rein and pretty much leave the curb one alone! Mine hates double though think its too much in his mouth!

we had a horse once that used to become too familiar with a bit, so we alternated between a few bits, only using a bit for a few nights then swapping it, this worked wonders for him, hope you find a solution soon i know how frustrating it is xx

Well if he goes well in a hanging cheek or wilkie then he doesn't mind a little poll action, What mouthpiece are your snaffles? The longer the cheek on the poll/weymouth then the more exaggerated the poll action, so if it's that he doesn't like you need to find the shortest cheeks possible. If it's the added curb action he's resisting, have you tried an elastic curb or a rubber guard on the curb chain?

I know this sounds daft but if he's not strong then try riding him in a headcoller or bitless bridle for a few days. Just to see if he does that with his head anyway! good luck

try a waterford or an old fashioned port hard to get hold of but this might work also have you had his teeth done recently ? might be worth a check x

yep teeth done, short shanks and all bits are made for ponies. Got a lwather curb on and its really only decoration. he doesnt seem to mind the poll action, though he does this if you ride him in a fylde wilkie? Very frustrating as he can and 80 % of time goes lovely. I'll get there ;D

I def think its the exaggerated poll action - the rein loop is on the outside on a fylde wilkie so that would give more poll pressure than one where the loop is on the inside. In that case a double is your best bet as said above - you can basically leave the curb alone and ride on the snaffle. Would be interested to know if he's better in a pelham with roundings on.
Have also been looking at the elevator bridle and wonder if that might help.

Gone even better tonight with double bridle. tried the pelham with roundings - horrific! He seems happy with DB so just going to use it a few times between shows and stick with snaffle. He only has a small mouth and quite a few bits i wanted to try had to special orderd. Thanks for all advice and ill keep you posted

If hes not strong and hes just throwing his head up at upward and downward transitions could this be that hes not working correctly? my dartmoor is in a jointed happymouth as he is in no way strong but doesn't like metal or poll action bits. normally it takes him at least 15minutes with his head in the air before he will concentrate. some times making upward transitions if i have't got him working on his backside correctly he will go forward with his head in the air instead of in contact (outline), and sometimes when doing downward transitions if i don't keep my leg while i said for the transition he will lazily come down and not carry on using himself so the head then comes up. I tend to ride him without a flash noseband as thats what it expected generally in the show ring but i do have to keep him thinking and going forward otherwise the head comes up and he runs round with his mouth open. at home if i am having a lazy day schooling i will pop a flash on to keep his mouth shut so its less work for my legs as he seems to give in quicker lol.
i hope this helps, it can sometimes be pointless just changing bits if the bit actually isn't the problem it may be hes trying to be lazy and knows when his riders legs are the least effective so he plays up at this point.
