A patey hunting cap is only safe if it's made to fit your head 2nd hand will not
Just like a a CO beagler will not have the fit of a made to measure patey
But you can wear whatever you like unless the show states it must be a safety hat

Agree with the above comment. I thought traditional headwear was bowler hats for men and beaglers for lady riders in the hunters? Of course a hat with a secure chin strap may be best if on a novice, nervy or spooky horse If you've qualifies for RI, well done (not quite sure from the post if you have or are doing qualifiers)

You will not get marked down for wearing a strapped hat - many riders are these days though many, myself included, still opt to wear a patey at the shows which allow choice in headwear.
I endorse that a second hand patey is risky - the hats are made to measure using an ancient contraption that takes the measurement and shape of your head and the hat is moulded from that - this is why they stay in place so well. Patey do so a hat with strap as well, could be another option
The CO beagle (Charles owen) IS NOT A RIDING HAT It is for foot beagling and states inside it should not be worn for riding. Please please do not cut corners with ones of these as you may as well ride in a paper hat
In terms of a rule change.... its on the horizon. Many county shows now have a rule in place to wear chinstraps and it all comes down to their insurance. This is something that will affect all shows so to me, yes, time is limited for the wearing of hunting caps, bowlers and toppers
