I need to register passport with me as the new owner (had pony on loan for some time now) but would like to take the pony out to some shows. Am I totally grounded whilst the passport is away? Or is there anything I can do?
Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this...

It is always a good idea to photo-copy or scan the passport as a precaution as things do get lost in the post! However, we have never been asked to show passport either.

It s now illegal to travel without one, and I have been asked for it once when I had a tyre blow out on a dual carriageway - the police asked if I had it on me (it wasn't checked however I guess I have an honest face!). Bear in mind if you are unlucky enough to break down most (I assume all reputable) won't travel your horse without one.
I keep a couple of photocopies of his in case it gets delayed somewhere, and I normally pay the extra post so I send it Monday it arrives Tuesday and wherever it's gone it's always come back overnight fast post too when I've asked. JMB was understandably longer at the beginning of the year. I would travel wth a photocopy locally but legally not sure where you'd be if you need a recovery!

We've never been checked except in the case of breakdowns when they tend to be requested by the transport companies

When I sent one off once the PIO sent me a temporary one by email to use in the meantime - I don't know if that's the case with other PIO though

I would keep a copy of the passport anyway and proof of postage as it is an offence to keep a horse without a passport.

I could have given them a sheep or cow passport and they wouldn't have noticed otherwise!!!!! They would have noticed the difference as sheep do not have passports and cattle ones all look alike at first glance.

We were stopped a few years back by police with an RSPCA person doing random animal transportation checks (anything from a dog in a car through to cattle/sheep trucks). They looked blank when I offered the passport as though they'd never heard of horse passports before and just had a cursory flick through it without actually looking at anything! They had no idea what they were looking at and 2 minutes later we were on our way.
As has been said above, I wouldn't risk travelling without a passport purely in case of a breakdown as professional transporters have to have the passport with any horse they travel by law and as part of their insurance obligations.
On a slightly off topic note, when stabling away at a show recently we all had to show passports to prove vaccinations were up to date before unloading. Indeed passports were checked but they just flicked to the vaccination page without establishing whether the passport was actually for the horse on the lorry.

We do BE and you are not allowed to offload without your passport being checked for vaccinations. They are not checked against the horse, but when the animal is registered you have to register the passport with them
