I have a youngster large m&m who has such a big canter I feel like I'm going to pop off. As I'm getting older in my years im really struggling. I backed him a year ago and have done one show and one dressage with him and although uptight in the warm up he behaved impeccably.I am so concerned about a future home I can't bring myself to advertise him.its ridiculous as I really wanted a pony with a big canter but just feel there is too much pony going on. Has anyone else had an issue like this but persevered.please constructive comments only.I ride to novice /elem on my other pony and can ride him without stirrups...but his movement is really not a patch on the youngster.

Is the feeling genuinely due to his stride length or is he just long in the canter due to being a baby and not connected enough yet? If the latter then schooling (by someone else if necessary) will greatly improve the feel. Pilates or similar may help you too.
Maybe have a couple of lessons to see where the problem lies and see what options there are. Good luck

I've had exactly the same issue.
Firstly, get your saddle checked. A change of saddle has worked wonders for me. Then, a couple of lessons with a good instructor who will help get your horse working correctly through his back.
The combination of both of the above has worked for me, I am no longer thrown out of the saddle when he moves and he is now a very comfortable ride. My youngster is a 17hds hunter with a huge stride.
Good luck x

Persevere - it definitely gets better as they get older ! Agree about the saddle also , a different one can make a huge difference , and I can't even begin to imagine life without my Heather Moffat seat saver , it's an utterly wonderful invention and absolutely not to be confused with your bog standard saddle pad !

Think I'm going to need to get a dressage saddle to help hold me in...maybe even a basket saddle!! I will try to persevere as he is a good boy.

Get a really good dressage saddle, probably the most expensive you can afford and a balance strap on the front. Often it just takes putting the little finger under the balance strap and that tiny help somehow keeps your butt secure. The biggest help ever are Free Jump stirrups. Now I know they are hideously expensive but they are worth double! Yours feet will not move and the rest follows.
