Hello!
I have recently bought a novice fell. I have shown welshies and plaiteds before but this is my first fell so I am after any tips and advice
We will be aiming for the RIHS pretty polly and Amateurs next season as well as doing the Pictons.
Would a lyrca hood rub out my mares mane? I would like to keep her tail 'bedding free' the night before a show, do tail bags actually work/stay on?
Where can I buy a nice hunter bridle with plaited browband that won't break the bank and how thick in inches should the noseband be?
Any other advice appreciated
Thanks!

I've never come across a Lycra hood rubbing out a mane before? would it be for every day use or just for keeping clean (i.e Shows)?? We put a hood on my highland and doesn't cause an issue, the only thing we find rubs out manes are rugs with "Seems" and avoid Rugs with separate necks. Electric fence would be a godsend around anything worth itching on and we keep youngstock away too as some of them like to chew!! Tail bags are great! You can get cheap ones on eBay and id personally make sure they're waterproof in case the lay in poo or god knows what!! The one we have you plait the tail and then slip it over tail and Velcro through the top of the plait. As for bridles, you may be better of buying a bridle and then the browband separately, You'll struggle to find one for sale complete. Nosebands are personal preference and depends on your horses head - normally 1" or 1" 1/2 inch is a decent size but you wouldn't want to cover up your ponies face Fylde do beautiful bridles and parts to make your own and are lovely and soft too! eBay or Amazon all do bridles if you look, and you wouldn't even guess

We couldn't put a lycra hood on any of our Fells as they are all such warm things they would do more damage trying to get the hood off!! Personally I wouldn't use a tail bag either, it only takes a few minutes in the morning to brush a tail through. I do use tail guards with bag attached for travelling though.
Caldene do a nice bridle which is about half the price of the Fylde but you would have to buy a plaited browband separately as they have standard plain browbands.
PS how is your mare bred? We found that one Fell wasn't enough and we have 5 now!

Welcome to the fell world I don't use a lycra hood on my lad just a body, find a hood flattens and kinks his mane. I don't use a tail bag overnight either just brush it out in the morning before i set off for the show. His bridle I bought from oakfield direct, you can pick your noseband width and he's in a 1.5 inch. You'd have to buy a plaited browband separately. Think the bridle was around 45quid for English leather.

Welcome to the fell world!! They are the best ponies ever!! I've found cotton sheets with a hood are just as good as a lyrics hood, though used both and neither damage the mane. Never used a tail bag on the fells as you have to plait to get it to stay in and all the hair on fells should be straight. Again a few seem to be plaiting the mane to keep it protected, i leave all mine loose and either just rug with a full rug when out to stop them chewing each other's manes. Oil based products are great for keeping it soft and growing... Heavy horse products sell pig oil in large volumes, I oil mane, tail and feathers once a week! Stops any mud sticking, and staining on the tails! Good luck... Worth following the fell pony group page on Facebook for loads of information!!
