Did you see the Feral Cat Appeal in the H&H last week? I only just read mine, as have been ill. They are looking for safe homes for feral and semi feral, cats and kittens www.scratchingpost.co.uk I would love to take on a couple, but I know they would end up indoors and I have 3 house cats already!

Funny you should say that!! I have been involved with feral cats for a while. A couple of years ago we had a very hungry one appear in the year, fed him and eventually he just moved into the house. Sadly he got run over 6 months later. Last summer we had 2 young kittens appear in the barn and started to feed them but they remained very wary. A little later we found a 3 week old kitten wandering around on its own and brought it into the house to hand rear her. She (Trouble) has remained as an indoor cat but is a bit wild at times, doesn't like too much fuss. With time the one of the older kittens became reasonably tame and we got her and the other one (had to trap her humanely) neutered with the help of CPL. Shortly after this two more kittens appeared who seemed to be from the same litter as Trouble, they were terrified of people but lived under the hay in the barn so were fed. We also got them trapped and neutered, then kept them in a dog crate for a few weeks as one had a bad cold. They soon became quite friendly (with me at least) and we found them a new home on a smallholding. Over the past few months the older cats got tamer and the bravest one started coming in to the house, via the window. Soon after the other one also got brave enough to come in as well. Sadly she is the one that somebody ran over a few weeks ago. Since then the other now thinks she is a house cat, waits on the window sill in the morning for breakfast and generally spends the rest of the day in a chair. She gets put out at night. Funnily enough, she is too afraid to move from the room she knows and will run away if carried elsewhere in the house. I guess it is the natural escape instinct. They are a pleasure to have around so I would encourage you to help one with a home if at all possible. It's up to you whether you encourage them into your home but they will be equally as happy with a warm bed, some food and attention if kept outside. Here are two photos of Candyfloss, the outdoor cat (!!) and one of Trouble, with the dogs.

I guess we must be equally as mad!! I always did have a soft spot for waifs and strays of any sort!! Your cats look so spoilt. I think that the mother feral cat here knows that I will look after her babies and brings them to me, then goes off and has more kittens!! We have recently gained another cat, possibly a sibling to those we already have, not sure where it has been until now though. He needs catching and neutering, as does mother cat, although I haven't seen her for a time.

I dont think your mad. Cats are unique! They train us to PURrfection, and even though we know they are doing it, we dont care. Extremely clever animals! I wouldnt let my husband dominate me, like my cats do!

Had an old friend come round yesterday, who has lots of chickens and RATS! She went off clutching the Feral Cats advert, so hopefully a couple will have a new home shortly.
