It was amazing!! Love the Whitakers, David Broome, Harvey Smith etc etc but for me Nick Skelton will always be the greatest show jumper of all time. Such a quiet, considerate rider even when the pressure is on.

Well done Nick Maxandpaddy - I was lucky enough to ride Ryan's Son out on a regular basis when I worked for John and was there on that very very sad fateful day at hickstead. I still cry when I see the video footage of him.

Omg only just heard this during half time in the hockey, absolutely b***dy brilliant news! Maxandpaddy Ryans Son and Apollo were my favourites as well, I've always been a sucker for a big white face lol Apollo was so brave coming down that derby bank year after year. those were the days when show jumpers had names you could actually remember instead of the foreign Van Het whatever they all seem to be called these days (I'm getting old )

Well, you'd expect foreign bred horses to have foreign names surely? At least they don't have commercial additions any more.

He was my horse heart throb Philippa....I was glued to Hickstead that day to watch his round, saw him bank that jump, sat in tears hoping he was ok, then spent about another month in tears getting over his loss, your soooo lucky to of known him so remember the good ....not the sad
Those days were special for show jumping, ordinary people - people you could really identify with, grafters, farmers, characters with horses that ranged in size shape and breed.
Showjumping wouldn't be what it is today without them.... which makes Nick Skeltons Gold today extra special!!! How many other Olympians - other than the Whitaker brothers - have been to 7 Olympics
Amazing xxx

Well, you'd expect foreign bred horses to have foreign names surely? At least they don't have commercial additions any more. Sarahp why do you always take what I say and question it? My point was that 30 years ago when showjumping was in its heyday we could all remember the names of our heroes... Deister was German but his name was pronouncable, Hugo Simon rode a horse called Butterfly, there was Boomerang, Philco,Countryman, etc. Yes they sometimes carried the names of their sponsors but I can tell you that the best times of my teenage years were spent watching Henderson Milton as he was then at Birchinley Manor. Later I was lucky enough to be show secretary there and witnessed some fabulous show jumping and afterwards I was mentored by the late Jim Roocroft who took me under his wing to assist with course building at Royal Lancs again in its heyday. I was 16 years old at the time. I'll never forget standing with the flag at the finish markers of the International Trial as the great It's Otto finished his round. So I actually I preferred a time when these great horses carried the names of their sponsors, the clinical nature of showjumping these days does not hold any interest for me which is why I'm so thrilled with today's result.

Have to say I'm in total agreement with you on this. I also have no interest in today's showjumping and it was something I couldn't live without 25 years ago. It was my life!! It is so commercialised nowadays and sponsors paid hefty amounts to have their names on these great horses, money that was needed to keep these great riders and horses travelling the world representing the country. Birchinley Manor, now there's a blast from the past. What a waste. I went there a couple of years ago and it was just full of football pitches. Criminal, there were some amazing competitions there. It could easily have been the Arena uk of the north in the right hands.

My absolute all time favourite sj moment was when Nick and Everest Lastic got the high jump record at Olympia in 1978! I dont know why SJ doesnt seem as magical now but that moment will stay with me forever!

It could easily have been the Arena uk of the north in the right hands. If Birchinley has stayed open we'd have probably carried on showjumping but when it closed it was too difficult to get the youngsters going so we sold the big horses and switched to showing natives. It was such a shame when the turned it into football pitches I have some wonderful memories including seeing John Whitaker jumping 7'4" puissance wall on Gammon when the horse was about 17. The roof came off the place that night!

Comanchediva - it's in no way personal. If I do, which I was unaware of, it's only because what you say raises questions in my mind. Is a forum not for debate? I think what has really changed has been the breeding of SJs, the WB breeders on the Continent were so far ahead of us that they now dominate the market. Mind you, some are now named in English anyway, I give you the great jumper and stallion For Pleasure! They did though import and use some carefully chosen TBs to use in their breeding programmes
My SJ heroes were of an earlier era - Harry Llewellyn, Pat Smythe, Harvey Smith, Alan Oliver, Peter Robson et al. Also Caroline Bradley who was the first to believe in intentionally breeding SJs and imported the WB stallion Marius, before that they were regarded as random freaks of nature. And yes, she bred the great Milton (I don't remember the Henderson bit!) by Marius who remained in her parents ownership after she so sadly died young. I remember they wouldn't let him travel to Seoul for the Olympics.

Sarahp, apologies, somtimes the written word can be misinterpreted in tone.
Henderson was a financial organisation if I remember correctly and a man whose name escapes me used to come to Birchinley selling branded Musto jackets and so on, my sister and I both conned dad I to buying us one. John brought Milton to Birchinley one Sunday and I remember my sister and her friend asking if they could go up the horsebox ramp and stroke him. The great horse was moulting and she got some hairs on her coat sleeve which she stuck to a piece of paper with sellotape. She told me recently she still has that sheet of paper!!
The Bradleys wouldn't let Milton travel to Seoul and he was never allowed to compete in the Hickstead Derby.

I'm so thrilled for him. He's my favourite rider and he has deserved it for a long time. It's lovely to see him get the recognition that he deserves!
