My son is 13, he has ridden since he was 5,and is a very considerate competent rider, we currently have a 14hh pony who he has very quickly outgrown. I don't like children being over horse and am reluctant to get him out of juniors too quickly. He loves showjumping. And loves workers which makes getting new steed very difficult as will, need something which can be measured in as a 148 for sj, but child is 5'7 and his brother is 6'5 so presuming he is going to be quite tall meaning a 148 will only last him 18 mths tops.. He is however skin and bone so weight no issue. I don't have the hugest of budgets but can offer an exceptional experienced home, with a lovely rider and a varied life. Dilemma is Do I get him a 148 then he can carry on as now, doing both disciplines but be aware that will need new one in 18 mths, meaning if I get something young he will prob be for sale by the time we have got the best of it? And if we do this, what's the best way of getting a big big 148, obv we are thinking of sec d/ connie, do we get more of a 15hh and hope we can get measured in? Ot do I get him a really nice horse which he can get more for money because could get young and bring on as have more time together, but this means he can't sj with his friends which will limit the social aspect which is important at 13 esp as a boy! And if you anybody has a big big pony that they are selling which jumps please let me know, Also happy to loan

Have you considered a loan 14.2 pony for twelve to eighteen months?

Yes that would probably be the best option but he is very competitive and wants to do affiliated sj and whp so thinking would be like looking for gold dust! 😩

You could always go for a section D, they're a bit wider so make a taller rider look small...great for wh and showjumping

I had that problem. My daughter was very tall for here age so I got her a Welsh D which took up her leg and being powerful and big striding she looked fine on it. And as well as doing junior MM it also gave her the introduction to competing with adults. All you need is a big forward going 14.2 that jumps and is true to the breed. They are out there but not easy to find.

I bred Welsh Ds (and no, I have nothing to suit you so I'm not trying to sell you one) and on reading this thread came to the conclusion early on that a good D is what you want. My daughter is 5'8", and was so by the age your son is now but happily jumped my 14.1hh D mare. If competing against horses, which is not what you want to do, you have to watch that they can make the distances but fine for pony classes. They should be deep and wide so take up the leg and you do get a LOT of pony for the height - in the past I've had on-D people come to try them and it's always funny to watch them dismount as they hit the ground long before they expect to from the ride given. Buy carefully though - many that are now in vogue for in hand showing have a very high knee action with sometimes little extension and so no decent canter or jump. Look for one with a lower action and natural extension, plus a good walk - those will normally have a good canter and jump as well. I expect though you will be looking for one experienced in jumping so that should turn up the right sort. Good luck!

Thanks Sarah, and what a shame you don't have any for me. Lol! I did think d or connie was the answer! Son is 5'7 and skinny so hopefully will look ok, I am going to find every 14.2 sec d in my area and go and sit on them! Will keep you posted
