So we have a horse that likes ripping his rugs,. We are on rug No5 Though the winter I used a shire with a neck. Have spent most of this season growing his mane back, As it made part of his mane come out! Do I get a different make with a neck or one without . Can someone help .

I prefer without a neck and I find the horseware and rambo ones the best , they have rip stop outers , they are really worth the money . I got a second hand one for a decent price xx

Premier equine stormbuster 450 or the new 200 are fabulous (well all PE rugs are actually) I have the full range for both my ponies from the nanobon coolers to the stormbusters. Great rugs that have never affected any of my ponies manes.

I have a few Weatherbeeta original turnouts and find then really nice for manes, silky linings don't affect them. One of mine is about 5 years old now, they seem pretty tough, odd catches in the fabric but nothing major. I'm luck mine don't wreck rugs though. The necks are quite generous so don't fatten really tight which less air in. Fit wise - Connemara and square Welsh section A really good fit. Finer show pony they were not as good.
The Weatherbeeta stable rugs with necks are nice too. Although I try to make sure the necks are turned back unless it's really cold.
Don't know what your pony is but I found the Shires ones a bit funny on the necks, quite long necks but tighter fitting.

I use Derby House full necks on my highland, quite a generous fit and hasn't affected her mane, I just use pig oil regularly to help the neck slip over the mane.
I do lift the neck back during the day if stabled though.
By the way, she's fully clipped in winter, that's the only reason for rugging!

Cheap duvet from tesco/morrisons doesn't rub the mane and lovely and cosy under a decent quilt - masta, mark Todd, amigo

I prefer rugs with a detachable neck, at least you can take it off when not required or if it does start to rub mane. Mark Todds are pretty good and not too expensive.

Which ever rug you go for, put a snuggy turnout hood underneath to protect the mane.

it's not necessarily the rug rubbing the mane that makes it fall out, it's the lack of air. i prefer a detachable hood which i put on in bad weather but take off when the horse is indoors or the weather fine.
