Please could I ask for some advice. I am heading into new territory with my daughter. As well as a competition pony, I am just about to buy her a 3 year old Connemara gelding. I know the pony and adore him. He is real quality and a big mover. We will be working towards eventing him in the future, but next year we just want to get out and about. What society would you join? He could be an M and M or plait. He would just be doing flat classes to start with. Would he be too young to do some qualifiers next year? We have never had an M and M before and only do workers at present. Can I just join the NPS or would I need to be in BSPS too? Any advice would be helpful.

Is he broken?? He's very young to be thinking about qualifiers in my opinion. I'd be looking at a few small shows for him for next year with the aim for qualifiers the year after when he's 5.

I would start him off at some good local shows, let him have a ride around, see the sights and maybe do a novice class together with an in hand class to prepare him for the conformation run up at affiliated level.

Unless you are intending on going to champs you don't necessarily have to be a member to qualify, some societies give you 7 days after the show to join.
Connemara ponies are slow to mature (physically and mentally) so don't overdo him, at four just pootling around a few small shows would do, I've had a couple of Connies, you just need to be patient x.

I could not have put it any better than Karen above. You dont need to join any societies for now. I have found that through the winter month there are local and affiliated shows and they usually have quite small entries so great experience for a baby and also the judges have a bit more time to give invaluable advice if you ask nicely ;-)

The NPS would be perfect for him in the future once you feel he is ready to do a bit more as the NPS have novice classes for both M&M and plaiteds. There is also a Pure Novice winter championship which is for very green/first season ponies that you dont have to be a member to qualify for, you would just need the owner of the pony to become a member for the Spring Festival in April. NPS don't need the rider or pony to be a member with them, which makes the total membership cheaper than BSPS for example.
