Hi all... Within the past 2 months I purchased my first car from a dealership, all seemed well, sold with 12 months mot etc, thinking I was safer buying from a dealership, and that surely they wouldn't sell a dangerous car to a first time driver?! From the off I had various problems, and they did fix them, but there have always been underlying problems with the car... 2 months in and it has been into another garage twice, had £300 spent on it already and about to be even more as it has just gone back into the garage as head gasket has gone. We have been told by the garage that has been doing the work on it that the car had no rear brakes, amongst other things, and they did question how it had passed it's mot.
Now, I'm going on the premise of horses, that I should have more rights as buying from a dealer, however, they wouldn't let us buy the car via a credit card, admittedly that's when alarm bells should of started! Any ideas what sort of rights I have?

I've had pretty much the same problem with the Peugeot I bought in October.. within the first 80 miles the brakes completely failed. Garage recovered the car, but we're then so difficult about it. I asked to get someone else to look at it when I got it back at their expense and they refused saying their garage would look at it before the released it.. baring in mind it was their garage that released it with faulty brakes. Never got them to pay to get it checked but they did return the car to me (with no fuel!) I have a two year warranty.. may be worth checking if you got one?

If you have had it for under six months they have to prove it is fit for purpose. Send them a letter rejecting it the car,http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/letter/letter-rejecting-a-second-hand-car-bought-from-a-dealer I would also report the MOT station that passed it VOSA

Contact your local Trading Standards people, they have a pretty good idea has to who is straight and fair and who isn't, my beloved purchased a car from a garage and had nothing but trouble, that is the route he went down, the Local Trading Standars Officer dictated a letter to him, he got a full refund, I'm guessing that is the letter Honeypot has sent the link for.
