Advice wanted, I have my own small holding with my own horse. When I sold my daughters pony I was left with 1 horse, my own. She didn't like being alone so we asked someone down the road if we could borrow their Shetland, which was on its own, as a field companion to mine.
We have had it 6 months and it constantly disrespects my electric fencing to fields I don't want it to graze in. It has broken so had to repair the wires to the box. Tonight I found it did it again even now I have 3 rows of wires. It's stressing me out as it's a greedy thing when my own total respects it.
Advice needed please

Not very helpful advice but Shetlands are love them or hate them!! I love there cheekiness!! But if it doesn't respect your electric fence I doubt it ever will so perhaps give it back and look for another companion pony? Unless you can make it run off the mains? Perhaps change the tape to 3 or 4 strips of 40mm tape and be 100% sure all tape is tought, knot free, has good connectors, nothing touching it etc etc etc. The shettie might be more respectful of a decent ping then!!

Get rid and get something else. There are plenty of companion ponies offered for loan, or go to the sales you will pick up a cheap pony for sure at this time of year.

There are hundreds of ponies at rescue centres who need companion homes. The vast majority don't have any issues that require additional costs/care than any other pony and for every equine that's rehomed from a rescue it opens up a space for another to be rescued.

I am not a huge fan of electric fencing for many reasons and this is one of them! I've known plenty of horses and ponies that have little or no respect for it, both Shetlands and others. I don't think you will convince your visitor to respect it now. The thing about Shetlands, like most small native ponies, is that they are extremely intelligent. You just cannot fool them. So, I would definitely find another companion. I know how stressful something like this can be, not to mention dangerous. Lots of good advice above. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, I don't think it will respect it, even if I lowered the tape. I have looked at blue cross loans, but I don't want to buy one as because my mare is old, I don't want to be in the same situation again, once she passes.
