A double jointed snaffle of some sort, side pieces not so critical, personally I always like fulmer snaffles although I don't see them much nowadays.

I have just started mouthing one of ours and I am old fashioned and using a bit with keys.after only having bit in for a couple of days for very short time , he sees the bit and opens his mouth and takes it on his own . He loves playing with it and I will keep using it for another week then switch to French link or sweet iron .

I use the neue schule pony bits on my sec a. Normal French links are too big for her little mouth (she is a 4.5") so the joins of the bit/link are right on the edges of her tongue. The neue schule lozenge sits centrally, and they are nice lightweight little bits.

To start with I like a happy mouth, it has a bit of give to it so is less likely to bruise a tender mouth, however once the pony has accepted the bit then I change to a loose ring french link. This has always worked well for me from 12 to 17 hands. It also take patience, little and often to start with.

I learnt from my mum and she was taught as a young girl and We always sew and old stocking or tights around a link but and soak it overnight in honey or golden syrup. The youngsters love it and for that first few weeks it really gets them mouthing the bit nicely.
