just a bit of a dilemma and never quite sure..i drive a non hgv 7.5t wagon and when i stop at services i am never quite sure which lane to use for diesel, hgv or cars ?? as a rule its adhoc however when pulling up at hgv lane i was told i couldnt use it as i needed a pre paid card or at other services i couldn't park in hgv car park or i would have got a fine .so last time i used a service station i opted for the car lane only to find i couldn't get out of the exit after filling up .There was not enough room to swing onto exit lane (and yes i can drive !!)so had to churn up there lovely green and kerb my skirts..Happy Days !!! The question is which lane should i use because i now panic when i have to stop at the service station and yes I'm that looney woman doing laps round the service station waving as she goes by

As hgv pumps are fast flow and lorry tanks are so big, any hgv pumps will require you to take your payment card in to the counter before they will authorise fuel.
If using the car pumps, always try and use a pump to the outside edge - the reason for this is that a lorry can block the cameras from seeing car registrations and enable 'drive-offs'. If you put a lorry in the middle of a set of car pumps, the clerk will not authorise pumps for any cars hidden behind you and it causes chaos!
In terms of which one to use, it depends on the individual fuel station. At motorway services there is usually plenty of space so I tend to use the car ones (and also park in the hgv lorry park - have never had an issue doing this). At a smaller fuel station that you don't know, going to an hgv pump guarantees you enough space to leave safely - just pull up, take your card inside (or send a passenger in with it) and fill up.

Don't use motorway service stations as they charge ridiculously extortionate prices! LOL
It can be a pain in the bottom though filling up! I actually like the 'lorry' lanes as the pumps are super fast and you are done and away in no time. The one and only time I used a lorry pump at a motorway service station I had to go in and leave my card with them so that is a bit of a pain. One of our larger local garages has a diesel lorry pump out on the edge of the forecourt and that is super handy for this reason and very easy to get to. Our little local garage is very cheap but I have to approach from one direction only and when I go to leave I have to get my 10 year old daughter to check for traffic as I cannot see due to the angle!
Oh and I have parked in the coach parking at services and HGV and never got a ticket even though there are loads of signs threatening it. Where are we supposed to park? It is clearly signposted that you cannot park with the cars. I think these signs are more for people parking up and sleeping there as there are charges???
I didn't know about the vision issues sjw87 - interesting, thanks.

thanks for your replies .. i think now i will always opt for the hgv lane.It seems the safer option and thankuou sjw87 re the middle set of pumps i did not know this.. i laughed to myself, that would have been my next jaunt at the service stations.. a queue of angry motorists behind me ..i think i 'd rather run out of diesel !!!Oh and re hgv car park ill take my chances but its like you say mcnaughty the sign are plastered everywhere and the fines aren't cheap

blimey i have never seen a sign threatening a fine for parking in the wrong place but then I am not the most observant person in the world! if i need to park at a services i park with the lorries and it has never been a problem. it seems unusual for them to be very full. at services even though it's a pain to take your card in first, i use the hgv lane but elsewhere i mostly use a car lane. i have a list of places in my head where i know it is easy to fill up and I tend to stick to these, and always make sure i have plenty of fuel - ideally more than half a tank - so I am never in a situation where I am desperate to fill up and there is nowhere easy to do it. did once take the edge off the canopy at a local garage ..............

I have always used the HGV lanes to fill up at services just have to take my card in first. My tank is the wrong side (drivers) to be able to use outside lane at most car ones and I don't want to be the one who rips a pump out trying to turn 😳.
I've never noticed the signs in the hgv park I must admit, I use them when I have to but I hate them. Last season we parked at the nice posh newer one in Surrey on M25 out of desperation after a lovely 4 hour delay and as we got out the guy next to us was peeing on his front tyre - lovely. They always stink with indeterminate puddles to not step in and I Wont leave my daughter in the lorry alone.
Sometimes (not often) there's a park for caravans and campervans and mobile homes and I'll opt for that one. A lovely man at the barrier at dartford crossing before they got rid of them, charged me less than a lorry at the mobile home rate as we have a bed and oven so he said that counted!! So that'll be my argument if they moan at me!
Out of choice I use our local garage near the yard as it has 2 fast lorry pumps, the guys are really lovely and it has an M&S to stock up show food and the obligatory show trip Percy Pigs!!!

I always used garages I knew and would make a point of filling up on the way home, that way there would always be enough if I had to go somewhere in an emergancy. I shopped for the best prices and also where I could get my lorry in and out of.

As a rule we use the diesel only pump at our local petrol stations, out of the way and not under the covering (some are a little low!). Out and about we usually do the same thing, maybe we've been lucky - haven't had to pre-pay or leave card anywhere.
Also always use coach parks at services too!!

Having been fined £200 for parking in the wrong area of a motorway car park I now always go and ask where can I park if I have the trailer on - this was in 2008 and despite me arguing the fine with the company apparently I did not have a leg to stand on as I had parked in the wrong place - so it can happen, though I think it would only now cost you £80. When filling the lorry up I usually use the lorry area, but go in and ask them to take £50 off my credit card as otherwise they want you to leave your credit card with them!!

This is all quite interesting - not the filling up bit as we have a 3.5 ton so always use the car lanes but the parking bit. We usually stay at the Travel Lodge near Grantham and just park up (as do many others in small lorries and trailers) I have never had a parking ticket and they have never said we can't park there you have to give your reg in to the reception but I will look out at other places now. Daughter usually often requests a toilet break on motorway so will have to check we can park up, although I would have thought a 3.5 ton would be same as a motor home? Gosh isn't life complicated!!
