Shoot me down, blast away...I've seen a few pics from the early shows and was shocked by how light and swan like the little sp's are now looking, omgoodness they cant get any lighter or they'l snap! Now this isnt an attack on anyone or a criticism of breeders, but they're getting more and more refined to the point where to me they look like pony china dolls. Stunning in a fragile kind of way, but the type seems to of changed hugely in just a few years I have just recently got new glasses so maybe ive been blind for the last few years

Lol yes you are right. I forget over winter how "dainty' my LRSP is and then I clip her legs out and there's tiny little sticks under all the hair lol and she's actually quite a substantial pony against some I see.

The shp's have gone the same way. The preferred type now in shp's are a similar build to the sp's of yesteryear. That's not to say that they aren't wonderful ponies, just a shame how much substance has been lost with modern trends

Across the board though isn't it. Look at some of the natives. Highlands especially.

Agree some are very fine and when they have their heads in and are scuttling along they rather remind me of daddy long legs (tongue in cheek)
My 'new' pony is just starting in local show pony classes, she is majority section B so looks heavy compared to ones I see at affiliated level yet she really isnt a heavy built pony

Has this a worrying similarity to dog breeding where certain breeds are being bred to highlight an accentuated pretty shape over well being, health and type?
Like I said this isn't personal to anyone

Don't think that this is just with show ponies...
Lots of breeds seem to have lost their type over the years to keep up with the demands of the markets

if you look at the National Hunt horses of the 70's to now - they too are lighter build in general

Well stick to your guns peeps! I personally like a sp to have bone aswell as a decent length of rein .
