Right posting on behalf of a friend. The short of it she has a horse that she is paying to be ridden at shows and produced at their yard. She pays for classes and everything. At the weekend the horse went to its first show won and went champion. He won a rug and 10 pounds. Said owner went to take rosettes home and the rider said that she couldn't do that as they were his. He said its the international law that riders keep rosettes , cups and prizes won and owner keeps money. Is this correct She is devastated as the rosettes mean everything to her and are in pride of place at home. Please help horsegossipers. I always thought owners kept everything unless prior arrangement.

There is no rule that I know of and I have ridden for people, had people ride for me and had horse and ponies produced. I would usually always give rosettes to a child who was riding for me and if they were lucky, some pocket money. Some ride for a set fee. The money/rosettes etc is an arrangement that should be made clear from the start with any producer.

as said above there's no such law. They should have a contract with this sort of thing set out. The producer is already getting paid and the good advertising from winning the class. The least they should do is let the owner keep the rosette etc especially if the owner is paying for it. Otherwise what's the point!!!!

When anyone has ever ridden for me, especially children I let them keep the prize money and one rosette, if they have loads. For an adult producer to want to keep the rosette when they probably have cupboard full is a bit petty, they are being paid to ride. I would ask to see the contract and ask where it says they get to keep every thing.

My horse is currently being produced and I take home rosettes and prize money. I'd be getting a different rider if I was your friend xx

I had a pony produced, the child rider kept the rosettes, I got any prize money. When I had a SRT produced, I got rosettes, sashes & prize money. I'm with carrots & mints, have a word with your producer.

After paying all the fees I'd want the blooming rosette and the prize money! Then id probably buy the rider a picture of the day or polo shirt or something with the winnings. Then feel guilty and send a card, become needy, minor stalking ...the list goes on
The moral of this story is: Sort it in advance

I rode a friends horse at a Championship show a few years ago; was more than happy for what she felt was the normal thing which was rider keeps prize money, owner keeps rosettes. However, I paid the entry fee to ride the horse in a "fun" class later in the day; we received a rosette just for entering, and the owner went in to my lorry and took it as it was her horse!

as the Producer is paid to do a job, in my opinion the winnings from all classes are the owners including rugs rosettes etc

All sorted now guys but thanks for all the responses. Owner and rider are now happy and if it's a special rosette the owner will pay for a copy for rider.
