Does anyone have any recommendations for hoof supplements to strengthen up the hoof? I have a 4 year old and since breaking his feet always look like they need doing. They chip and look generally messy. The farrier is reluctant to shoe as he says they will break even more with nail holes.
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Can definitely recommend Biotin supplement for hoof problems. Not a quick fix but use it regularly and works wonders. Our sec C gelding had very poor hoof quality and badly bruised soles. He has now been fed biotin for the last two years and has no problems with his hooves. He wears studs in the ring with no problems, no bruising, no lost shoes and has had a fabulous season so far this year, winning two HOYS qualifiers.

Only problem I have is that my traditional can sense it in his feed and I have to cover the smell and the flavour - not sure which it is he doesn't like. It's strange as he is not usually picky.

I've always found that any quality balancer will do the trick with feet, and there are some that make a point of containing all the necessary micronutrients for strong new horn growth, including biotin, and will advertise the fact. They do though take time to work as anything dietary can only affect the new horn growing from the coronet band and a whole new foot takes around a year to grow down as far as the ground.
If your pony is a Connie there could be a further problem though as there is a gene in the breed leading to weak hoof horn. I'm no expert on Connies, you'd have to check that through breed channels if it might apply.

Top Spec Balancers, esp their Anti Lam supplement have very high spec hoof supplements in them and in all the correct amounts.

purchase some cornicresine and rub around the coronet band for extra growth, it will do a lot for your finger nails too!
