I'm a small 5ft 4 adult who weighs 7 1/2 stone. I've seen the most gorgeous section a pony for sale locally to me but I wondered people's opinions of wether I would be to big/look silly on her. She's 12hh and I haven't been to see her yet as wouldn't want to be labelled a time waster if I turned up and straight away realised she would be to small - honest options please, thanks

I expect, depending on the build of the pony, that weight wise you would be fine and well within the 20% rider (plus tack) weight guidelines. However, at 5'4" I wonder if you might look a little tall.

I have just moved down from a very substantial 14.2 traditional to a 13.3 substantial traditional and feel very much better, just about the right size for me. In all honesty I think you would feel too big for a 12hh. I have ridden 12.2 ponies and found those rather small with my legs feeling to be dangling a little even though all the ponies have had good fronts. Sounds silly but one issue with a small pony is actually getting on, quite tricky using the stirrup, you feel as though you are almost pulling them over. It is not a matter of weight at all, it will boil down to how you feel and keep in mind how you might feel 6 months down the line, it could be different. A lot depends on your plans for the future, if it is to show in small breed M and Ms you could be very happy. But go to see and I believe you will know more or less immediately. I have travelled to ponies just looked and said immediately, very politely I must add, that the pony is not what I am looking for. I would not waste my time or the owners having a ride if I had no intention of buying. Good luck.

I am not certain that you would find a 12 hand pony comfortable. Look for something 13.2 plus, I think you will find that size more suitable for you. Good luck

Only you can know how you feel on the pony - I'm 5'4 and ride a 13 2 native, we also have a 13 hand nursery stakes pony that I feel too big on. But I think because you are having doubts, they will probably always be there.

You can't go just on height but also need to consider build of the pony. My 5'8" daughter was very happy riding a 14.1hh Welsh D while finding 16hh TB eventer types too small for her - she said there was nothing to sit on!
