Hi all.
10 years ago my mare had a foal and we have no idea who or how it happened or even when. All I know is that it happened at a stud I was at when we was only a livery not for her to be put in foal.
My question is ..... Would you trust the stud again ? I'd like to think that I can as I'd like to go back with my 2 mares. Daft as it sounds. But I think people deserve seconds chances. The stud owner has no idea when or how as we was just there as a livery. It's a professional stud with facilities and a livery service that suits me and perfect for my horses. And plus she bred them so that's a bonus.

I think it depends on how they reacted when you mare became pregnant, did you get any help in keeping her until you were able to wean the foal? Did they help you get papers for the foal? If they did help you and it was a one off then yes, if they did not then no. I would assume that one of the boys jumped into the mares' paddock for some fun, although it is unlikely that he jumped back out unless the paddocks only had a single fence in-between in which case she could have been "helpful" by standing with her bum to the fence, if that is the case have they since double fenced where the boys get turned out?

Everything GW has said plus breeding is a mugs game at the moment unless you have specific plans for what you are planning to breed and have done your homework for the compatibility of sire & dam. Some of the top studs are not breeding at the moment or have seriously cut down numbers due to the current financial market.
All that said if you are certain this is the right stallion for your mares then yes, send them to stud.
I had a mare come back to me as she would not let the stallion near her, I knew there was something strange with her on her arrival back and low and behold she produced a super foal several months later to the sheer amazement of he people who had had her on loan. She had been nowhere near the stallion without the people apart from when they were turned out in adjoining paddocks. We think she must have backed up to the fence and he obliged. It happens.
Good luck whatever you decide.
