Hi, my section d is currently going beautifully in a loose ring Snaffle with a cambridge mouth peice, but next year we will be doing more open classes. does anyone have any advice on how to progress into a double. I have tried him in a Pelham with the same mouthpiece but he wasn't keen at all,I'm thinking it was the curb being fixed., I think he would be happier with a separate Weymouth. I was thinking of the same mouthpiece with a shortish shanks?

Go for short shanks and I would recommend an elastic or leather curb chain.
When you first ride him in a double ride off of the bradoon and only have a light contact on the curb rein. That is the correct way also please fit the noseband correctly, it should not be tight , you should be able to fit a man's finger between the nose and the leather.
Good luck

My first D had a short mouth and I found by trial and error (an afternoon with borrowed bits riding in them one by one) that the best bit for her was a rugby pelham, less in her mouth than having two bits, and a leather curb chain, done up too loosely to have any curb action at all! It dos need the extra headpiece though onto the loose ring on the bit. I rode her on the snaffle rein with no pressure on the curb one at all. so really all for show rather than use!

Thanks for that Sarah, I'm sure I'll find one on ebay or borrow one

SarahP, that's a sensible idea. The thin Bridoon headpiece (buckled on the offside) is vital though, so the Bridoon ring doesn't flap. I'm a lover of the elastic curb chain, less weight and very neat.
