Im in the process of pony hunting with a friend who is in the market for a nursery stakes pony for her son. At the begining of this hut I thought I was clear on what stamp we should be looking for but now Im not so sure as we have seen one extreme to another from fine SHP to mini cobblets. So I am very interested to know what HG people's opinions are on what makes a good type of a nursery stakes pony.
I think performance is the most important thing. A pony that will safely transition a child from Cradle Stakes to Open 13hh workers. They need to be bold, forward, yet not fizzy etc. Then a track record at NS or similar. So, I would be looking at type after that. On that, presumably correct conformation before type and then the ideal would be a middleweight hunter type.

As catkin says but do remember that the "type" mark is only 20 & that includes the mark awarded for conformation, so in all reality probably only about max 5 marks if I am judging, as it is less important in this class to me, than conformation (& way of going)
It is a performance class & 80% of the marks are awarded for this.
When I judge these classes I am delighted if the ponies are also suitable for SHP classes (personally I believe there are only 2 types: SP & SHP & that some SHPs also jump, but then in my days the ponies mostly all did both flat & WHP classes although that does seem to have largely disappeared!)
Suitability for the age of the jockey is very important - not all ponies that fit the class height can be truly seen as NS ponies - some may be too bold & forward going & can be more suited to 133WHP classes. If I was looking for this type of pony I would be more concerned with the partnership with the jockey than the "type" & older ponies with a track record in these classes would be my first port of call
We went to a show with above pony today, she's new to workers, although has done pc activities and such things before. Borrowed a child who had never sat on the pony, and low and behold - they won.
The pony goes in a snaffle, cantered in the same rhythm all the way round, giving the jockey a comfortable ride round. The other ponies they beat were all good ponies, a few had been to rihs, but my mare was the only pony in the class to be in a snaffle- yet when I was in nursery stakes, the vast majority where in snaffles. IMO, a nursery stakes pony should be seen to be able to be a kids pony, safe ride, level headed. Very few whp do the shp classes anymore, they come in all shapes and sizes, sometimes more blood types, and others more chunky types, but ultimately, they need to be a pony who could potentially take a child hunting safely surely?
