I used to use a "shaped" happy mouth straight bar to bit all my babies, they all had small mouths and this suited them very well, it was not bulky and did not bruise their mouths. This was a 4 inch which shows how small the ponies were, 4.75 is quite a healthy size. Some ponies like to feel something in their mouths, others don't, it is down to the pony, however the thicker the bit the kinder it is usually.

Happy Mouth bits are ideal for starting horses and ponies in. However, if your pony is already being ridden in a different bit and you are having problems, why not give a call at The Horse Bit Shop as they can discuss your pony and the issues that you are having in full. They offer a free bitting advice service over the phone and offer trial facilities on most bits so that you can "try before you buy".
