Mine does it sometimes. Don’t make excuses for him. It’s a naughty habit. Try some pepper spray ir chilli paste on your glove rather than wearing something under to protect yourself. Just remember not to rub your eyes. He needs to know it’s not the done thing.

I went to a demo years ago which recommended growing your fingernails and poking pony in the muzzle with one if he goes to nip - this was for colts - while remaining otherwise impassive. He needs to think he did it himself so decides it's a bad idea! I don't have long fingernails, so use something like a key that is unpleasantly pointy but not damaging to teach youngsters not to run their shoulder into me, it works a treat.
I appreciate that in the ring one is wearing gloves, but shouldn't the object be to retrain the pony not to do it at all, ever, rather than just to deter him from doing it in the ring?

Yes we have been working on him at home and doesn't do it, I think the trouble is the people that had him before had a mint in their hand to make him stand which is a no no for me no way do we give mints at any time.

You're someone after my own heart, I breed ponies and never feed any of mine from the hand at any time so that they don't learn to mug humans for treats. I'm not surprised that he can go for your hand in the ring if that's what was done with him, he knows full well now that that's when he got mints, just shows his intelligence. In that case I'd go for something nasty on the glove, as advised above, in time he'd get used to the no mint just a nasty taste scenario.
