Need some help ! I have been struggling for a long time to get my lad to canter straight . He always goes quarters in . He is quite backwards also which doesn’t help . When I push him forwards he backs off more and goes more crooked . He has regular physio checks and saddle checks so I know he is ok .We do plenty of hacking and different work , I have tried shoulder fore to get his front end over he just backs off . Any ideas ??

Get someone to watch you ride away from them to ensure you are sitting straight, most people do not so please do not be offended by my suggestion. Does he favour a lead? Does he equally put his quarters in on both reins?
The only other suggestion I have without the above information is, if you have a large school to ride in, get him on the straight and ask for the outside lead, obviously go back to trot before the corner.
You are going to need some help on the floor with this to watch what is happening, if possible film it so you yourself can see if there is a trigger.
Good luck
