Please can anyone help - not sure if there is a quick fix here but I am getting quite fit running round in circles.
Bought a 4yo Highland a few months back and I am struggling to get him to trot nicely in hand. He has had a fair amount of handling and is very quiet. Leads in like a lamb from the field and stands quietly but whenever I try to trot him up he either stops dead after a couple of strides or rushes off sideways and then stops dead. He also lunges quite quietly.
Please guys - any tips??

Make certain you stay by his shoulder. Use a fence to run along to help keep him straight. Aim to do a few steps and then increase. Get a friend to help you. Wear gloves, a hard hat and sensible footwear. This is not a quick fix but needs some time spent on it everyday.

And make sure you go with him when he transitions into trot, nothing more likely to put them off than leader not keeping up or striking off with them when they go. And lots of praise as they trot. With my As I could walk faster and longer until they had to go into trot to keep up with me, when I went too with much praise, doubt that would work with anything bigger though!
