yesterday 8.30 am i had a 3 yr old cut all went well but quite a bit of bleeding.
He was done standing up straight forward his bits were the size of tennis balls.
He has two inch line on both sides were his testicles were and on one side it is about 1/2 inch wide, the vet is on her way back this after noon as I am not happy with the open bits that have bits of scrotum hanging down.
My question is - is it not normal to have stitched a large incision ? as I now have another call out fee to pay and more work to be carried out.

most can be done with an open wound, to stitch means you can stitch in infection, to leave open leaves the swellinng and fluid build up to drain, though animal needs to be kept in a clean fly free enviroment with excersise to prevent excessive swelling. if anything is protruding from the incisions areas get vet straight out, they do bleed and drip in varying amounts some more than others but would get vet to check it if you are worried.

vet has been and put my mind at rest as he is older than the normal colts that I have seen and a larger pair !! I just need to keep him out and get him in once / twice a day and give his bits a wash and make sure he drains off any fluid.
advice very much to what you have said EmmaJane. I just need to check that he does not swell up.
Thank you

we had 3 colts done within the space of 12 months. one ended up with bits hanging out of the wound. the vet returned and sorted him out, put him on a course of antibiotics to be on the safe side. (none of which i paid for, as i felt that the vet was at fault). as emma said they do need to drain, and we hosed our chaps 3 times a day. they will swell for a couple of days as a result of the trauma, but should be back to normal within a week. bet not many men look at this thread!!!!!
