I get annoyed when I do everything for my pony and other young people do next to nothing as their parents do everything and then go in the show ring and take all the credit. When my pony is what he is because of my hard work with him and knowing him. I accept young children who show of course have a wonderful school master to up their confidence and thats great! But I see people 14yrs and over and still don't do anything for their pony/horse...and I don't think it's right and then they get stroppy at the horse when they don't win...if they took the time to work on that horse they may have more of a chance at winning! It annoys me quite alot ;D

Can you comment on how much you do etc?
Like do your parents muck out your ponies stable everyday? I can understand them feeding and turning out and stuff and being groom at shows....but shouldn't you have a responisibility with YOUR pony?

Maybe some are not able to get to their yards before school if they are not lucky enough to have their ponies at home. And I'm sure that judges are sensible enough to know that perhaps they haven't done it all themselves. You should be happy that you can do everything for your ponies - don't be so hard on others that may not be able to.

i agree with apple123 i am lucky enought to have my ponies on my own place but i still get things done for me not because i dont want to do them but because it is a family hobbie now if i want to show it is up to me to get my horse ready i do everything for a show but only because i prefere to do it my parents will groom for me at the shows ecpecally county level i need help then but i think it is great that peoples parents help i dont now what i would do with out there help !

Listen, I do not have my pony at home and I do have him at a yard and sometimes I have to cycle there to muck him out and see to him, I don't have it easy! But it's all part of the ownership.
Yes deviltoby, don't think you realise what I am getting at...
Right example ;D
2 girls at my yard 14 and 11 both have ponies during winter they come up only at weekends and sometimes just go off to a show after not riding all week not seeing their ponies all week. Their grandfather mucks out both ponies and his wifes horse everyday and does everything else for them. Even when they are there all they do is ride...the day before shows they don't wash the ponies as they don't want to get wet so their grandad does it....I don't see a bond between them...the ponies are merely objects to them this is what I don't like and don't agree with! And then show them off at shows as if they have put work in...when in fact they have done next to nothing!
Don't get me wrong at county level I have a friend who comes and grooms as I am not lucky enough to have parents who are in any bit horsey but they do try and help me the best they can, I appriciate that.

Well then it's more fool the parents/grandparents for doing it all for them isn't it, maybe they kids don't see anything wrong with this because everything has always been done for them.

Sophieandcallum its an unfortunate fact of life. Some people put the work in and some dont. It is sad that your friends would sooner let grandad do all the work. My daughter has to leave for school at 7, so cant do her pony, in the morning. But, she does go down every evening to groom and ride and still has 5 lots of homework to do!!!! Believe me, you will get more satisfaction knowing you do everything yourself. It is purely down to your hard work not anybody elses. Enjoy!

Loudmouth does all evening chores, mucks out 7 and rides 2 so she does do a lot of it and the results are hers, although her stepdad cleans the tack for shows!

My parents arn't at all horsey, My dad used to work at my great uncles stables as back then he had 70+ horses as he owned a large riding school. But since giving up the job he no longer breaks horses in or at all looks after them. I do everything myself, Except turnout during weekdays as my yard manager does that for me as i have to go to school still! But afterschool my routine is usually: Muckout Brush outside and the allyway Put away fork, spade, brush and wheelbarrow Fresh water Fresh haynet if he's not ate it all Go fetch him in Take off rugs etc Brush off/Hoofpick Ride 6x a week Brush off again Check hayliage again Make his breakfast and tea Half-An-Hour later i'll feed him Then wash feed bucket out and fill up the water again Rug him up in winter he goes without in summer. Give him his desert (Apple) Then i give him a kiss and and a hug and tell him i'll see him tomorrow and not to make a mess. Then i'll head home What about everybody else?

Yes, I find it alot more satisfying, I just don't see why they should have the privilege if they don't put any work in...as the 14yr old has had her pony for 4 years....and I see no bond between them Yet when both ponies see their grandfather they come galloping up the field! I have had my pony 8 months and he has been galloping up to see me for the last 6 months! It upsets me as 14yr olds pony is my old pony, and she hasn't been able to bond with the girl and she has so much to give, and the girl is holding her back but I can't do anything now

( It upsets me as 14yr olds pony is my old pony, and she hasn't been able to bond with the girl and she has so much to give, and the girl is holding her back but I can't do anything now ) no you cant do anything the most you can do is say something and to be honist it isnt your place to say anything anymore

Deviltoby- I don't think there is any need to be rude, it's a question and I was just interested how many people get everything done for them! As it surprises me how many people do! No it's not my business but for those who have taken part in the poll obviously don't mind! So if you are so bothered you don't have to take part! Well judging by the fact I have helped her and given her advice over the last 4 years on how to ride her how to do certain things because I know her inside out I think I do have a place to say something! Anyway thats besides the point...I was only giving an example I don't appreciate rude comments thank you very much

this to me doesnt say that you wanted to now what people do and dont do to me it i sounds abit like youre having a dig at people that dont do there horses i am only stating my opinion on things and if you thought i was being rude then am sorry but you should be happy that you do everything yourself and care less about those who dont it is there experiance at a lossv as a horse owners

Yes I am happy with the fact I do everything for my pony and I wouldn't have it any other way, just in the show ring it can be annoying. I am proud of my pony as I have worked so hard with him and am really pleased with the results,
It fasinates me how much people actually do thats all!

I think it depends on circumstances, but I agree, I think you should help as much as you possibly can. Saying that, I dont think I could manage without my mums help!!x

The question is whats the point in having a pony/horse if you don't do anything. Yeah don't get me wrong there's lots of work involved but that helps me bond with my pony.

I do absolutley everything myself, I've learn't that way and I'll stick that way, I wasn't mollycoddled with my horses, Im totally independ when it comes to my horses and to be honest although my mum and dad are not horsey in way way shape or form, I sometimes wish they were when im at shows etc because my friend takes me to my shows and when I get there and see everyone's parent's doing everything for them it rub's it in that mine are not.

i do most things but at the moment we have 8 ponies and people living with us and they are so horsey and the mum is the best teacher in the world there is me and another girl and we do all the riding and setting them up
her mum does all the mucking out and we do like all the riding waters feeding hay rugs etc
i do some of it at weekends but mostly we r at shows and our yard person does it so i get it quite easy cos i dont have to do much
if i did have to do it all any way there are 2 of us so it wouldn't take that long!!

I can't really say anything because my mum does do alot for me, My yard is quite a distance from where i live/go to school. In the week yard owner turns my pony out. Mum does the rest after work as the yard is on her way home. In the summer she will come and pick me up because it is worth it because I will want to ride etc.. Weekends, i do it all. However I have done all the schooling of my pony so i know when i go into the ring at shows its still my work.

This is a difficult thing to comment on, as on a forum like this, you will probably come across alot of people who have thier ponies produced. Also for some people doing all the work is not an option, alot of the people of this forum have more than one pony so after school and after riding it would not be physically possible nor practical to do every single thing yourself. For example once I have ridden 2 and Lunged my little cousins pony, it's nearly dark (in winter), so My Mum would rather do the mucking out and see the ponies being worked rather than me having to compromise thier excercise. Some people, send thier ponies to be produced because they know they have something special and want to nurture that very carefully, so thats one reason. Secondly, When a pony is at a producers, apart from mucking out grooming etc. it is best not to interfere wit the routine as the producer will have it down to a T. And Finally, when ponies are at producers they can be far away, so the cost of travelling would be extortianate (sp). Anyway, just my opinion .

i have 3 ponies and a new one coming at the weekend , 2 i produce but the owner lets me do what i want with them as if they are my own and 2 are mine , i cant get to the yard 3 days a week so my stepdad who runs the yard and produces the others mucks them out and does the other things , me and my stepdad broke the ones i produce , well he held them lunged them and i sat on but once the worst was over i had to school them and bring them on , and i still do as their only babies , i muck out at weekends and do all the jobs , i get them ready for in the ring at shows , ect ect i feel like im ahcieving more doing it that way , when ponies are sent away to producers it is often better not to interfier but if you have intentions of riding in the ring i think its a must to go and ride your pony to be able to know them well enough , not evry rider can just jump on and get a tune out of a pony .
hopeteam > my mum does the same thing because by the time ive ridden 3 sometimes 4 or 5 ponies at the yard its dark and thing would run so late .

my parents are divorced so half the week i'm with my mum and in the mornings i don't normally have time but i turn them out. when i get home in the afternoon i ride both ponies and mum mucks out(normally she does it when i'm at school) then icome back in and do waters, feeds, haynets, rug up etc. i finish school at 5 to 4. the other half of the week i can't come up to the yard as it's a half hour drive and the ponies are less then a minute walk from the house. in the summer holidays when i was at my mums i was up at 6 and out to the ponies at 10 past and i had finished them by quarter to 7
