i would love to have a yorkie, and i know all the hard work involved, cost, and me and my sister would buy it, look after it, etc, but my dad says it will chase the cat and dig up the garden! i told him thats a stereotype but he keeps saying no! what the best tips to persuade him? i would obvs wait til the summer holidays so i can put lots of time into training it - then we will work out what we can do withi t while me and my sis are at school. p.s. we live on a farm so space isn't the problem.its my dad. lol

Well if you have a puppy, your dad is probably right, it may well chase the cat and dig up the garden! I would say a puppy is a real handful for the first year and you need to be prepared for that. Have you thought about an older dog, maybe a rescue dog? That way you wouldn't have to go through the mayhem that a puppy can bring, and a rescue centre could tell you in advance if a dog has any particular issues, and they are very keen to find the right dog for you.
You also have to accept that there needs to be someone to look after a dog whilst you're not there - that would probably mean mum or dad, and that's quite a commitment, especially if they are busy working during the day.

lol i dont have a problem with yorkies, just as a vet nurse you see the manky teeth, the heart murmurs, the owners that carry them round like they are little children etc!! have met one nice yorkie but the rest have been grotty old things!!! just my experience, guess its cuz a lot of people who have them treat them like children and not what they are, a dog!! no offence if you have one!!! im sure not all owners are like that.

How I agree with you about little dogs, people treat them like babies and that makes them insecure. I have 3 Italian greyhounds and they are like china dolls. I do not treat them like babies, and they have all the hunting skills of a wolf. The Italian Greyhoud Club dress them up like dolls and keep them in indoor cages, so they cannot run about and hurt themselves. I have mine charging like trains all over the place and they have been fine. One is 13 years old. They are totally obedient and respectfull of me. Be the leader of the pack, no matter how small your little pooch is.

My dog was a handful up until she was about 4! A 'docile' Labrador! It's not as easy as you think, and it will be your mum and dad having to look after the dog while your at school, you have to remember that!
Just think it through long and hard! A rescue dog would be much better or just an older dog from another home, they may be more willing then....but don't know if a yorkie would be the best either....if they are yappy it does your head in! But if thats what you want then good luck!

if you get a dog, get a bichon frise!!! they love cats are fab round all animals in fact and dont require 4 hours a day exercise, they happily sleep for most of the day and have the most amazing temperament, mine is asleep on my feet right now!! we do not know she is there most of the time such good doggies!! love attention, but not in the way a working dog breed does, just cuddles, no mad running around!!

My friend has a Fox hound x beagle and though she's 100 times bigger than any cat she is also extremely frightend of them.. I found her once, cowering on my sofa after the cat told her off for getting too close..I dont think she'd even realsied there was a cat anywhere near her!! LOL
OP - why does your dad not want a dog? there must be a reason as to why he is against a dog?
