JUDGE PUT 2 VERY SMART OLDER PONIES ABOVE BUT BOTH HAD TAKEN OFF WITH THE LEADERS AND NEARLY KNOCKED THEM FLYING!!! JUDGE EVEN SPOKE TO THEM ABOUT IT. IM NOT BOTHERED HE DIDNT WIN HE WAS FAB TODAY AND IT WAS GOOD EXPERIENCE, HE EVEN DID A FR CLASS WITH MY 7YR OLD DAUGHTER AND IT WAS ALSO HER 1ST!!! EVEN THEN A PONY THAT BUCKED WAS PLACED ABOVE THEM??MY FRIENDS PONY DID A NR PERFECT SHOW AND WASNT PLACED. BUT I DO THINK IT WAS POOR JUDGING AND WOULD HAVE GIVEN MY DAUGHTER CONFIDENCE TO HAVE HAD A CUP.

Do not feel alone on this!! it isnt just in the lead reins witnessed the same thing today! However i feel..and it is very true, that a lead rein pony should be 200% safe in any given situation, had i been that judge the pony wouldve been kicked out of the ring, before any poor child got hurt. The first ridden pony should be the same and neither should buck under any circumstance. As an old breeder friend of mine said many times.. a lead rein pony should take the child, a first ridden pony should be taken by the child! very true! but im afraid this is the showing world and sounds harsh but be prepared to get used to it! lol ;D

my pony is only 5 now and until today our riders riding has let him down, being boingy and bouncing around etc but of no detriment to our pony he just got on with it, But with a lead rein pony manners should be paramount, ours is particularly lazy but safe and prfer it that way, have at higher level seen some very sharpe lead rein ponies that i wouldnt contemplate putting my child on. Down be down hearted at all, but do have a good look at the pony and his type etc, as maybe at 4 he is weaker than the others and it does play a part in a type class, do you have some pictures ?

Emmajane you are right about sharp lead rein ponies, i cannot count how many i have seen ponies being lunged for hours or ridden by adults before chucking the tiny jockey on board on route to the ring!! it is awful and makes a complete mockery of the meaning of lead rein pony!! Why people would want to put their kids on such ponies is beyond me, for a poxy little rosette?? makes me wonder if they had children just so they could do the classes if theyre prepared to do this?? just my thoughts!!

THIS PONY WAS RIDDEN BY AN ADULT OUTSIDE THE RING AND THE OWNER DIDNT KNOW WHETHER TO PUT CHILD ON IT OR NOT!! HOW BAD IS THAT.
THE FIRST CLASS WAS LR PONY THE SECOND WAS M&M WHICH I CAN SAY HE ISNT MATURE YET BUT THE FIRST I THOUGHT WAS MORE ON PERFORMANCE.

Looks Very Sweet, remeber every judges opnion if different, we have taken to doing riding club for variety of classes judged on own merits rather than just pur showing, our pony takes no working in, is brought off tacked up and away we go, if a new show ground i will walk him round for a few mins just so he knows its all ok, we do handy pony, games, rideability and showing, also young handler, and would rather have my true allround kids pony that will follow me about or be led by children on show day on their own in a handler class and do as hes told, ok yesterday didnt want to trot but they did a extra 3 - 4 laps of ring in young handler as were first there so both tired. Be happy with what you have and just do the best you can, i get very bored showing let alone the kids, and i think games and handy pony done in a sensible manner teach a pony alot about the world and makes them very tolerant, ok mine lacks sparkle in an energy sense but i also lack the worry of if hes safe or not as i know 95% of the time he is with the 5% allowance for the fact he is a real pony, not plastic breyer toy, and does have a mind of its own

Emmajane, our pony is the same as yours, arent they worth their weight in gold? if running late for whatever reason we know both the kids ponies can be chucked straight off the wagon into the ring and we are a big believer in the handy ponies etc, the kids and ponies enjoy it loads. I once worked on a showing yard the ponies were so bored from showing and schooling that they were getting dangerous, took me 6 months to persuade owner to let me hack them out, a few canters up the woods later, once they had got over the excitement..and boy was that hair raising..they were so much more relaxed and even willing to school. The owner did however demand we rode out in bungees or side reins, we used to get 100 yards down the road, jump off, take schooling aids off and stick them in our pockets til the last 100yards on the way home!!! the ponies loved every minute and went on to qualify hoys!

Our MM LR is part of the family ,and we try and keep her a happy pony .Before she went to HOYS last year ,she was at a friends birthday party, which was held in an indoor school ,4yr old riding her off LR.Doing gymkhana on LR , and generally enjoying them selves. She then went to HOYS and was placed 4th with 4yr old jockey. She is a true childs pony ,and she is truly one in a million ,and is priceless. We could never sell her as so had been such a good pony who owes as nothing ,but we owe her so much, and will look after her till the end of her days.

Joules that is lovely, we had one similar, would win his classes 1 day do cowboys and indians at home and used to go and help a disabled little girl in the summer, what a star. I paid £200 for him as found him being used as a lawnmower, he was out hunting few weeks ago with his tiny jockey, has been a year since he went, but his owner is still so so grateful to us..and him. They are few and far between.

I always say a pony that goes to bed happy will be a good one. UPDATE the pony that won the LR class took res champion. Someone needs to explain LR ponies to the judge.
